Does the Bible say do not paint your eyes?
  • Jeremiah Embs - In Reply on Mark 3 - 4 years ago
Bible doesn't say "don't paint eyes," but it is vain meaning it is not important. What is important is the spirit and good works. So you can paint your eyes if you want, but it is better to show people God in your life. Modesty is important.

Jeremiah 4:30 And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.

Proverbs 31:30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

First Timothy 2:9-10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

Well, some may offer comment that the Bible does state this, but really, there is no direct command for women not to 'paint up'. Rather, it was well known in the olden days (& even now), that 'ladies of the night' were the ones who usually beautified themselves so as to attract customers.

So, with that in mind, including other enhancements to the face, hair, clothing, etc., the warning went out by apostle Paul to Timothy in 1 Tim 2:9, 10: "women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array. But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works."

And Peter said in 1 Pet 3:3, 4: "Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel. But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price."

I think that it has to be a personal understanding & conviction as to what to do in this regard, as it would be sin & vanity for any other reason other than to enhance one's appearance yet maintaining the demeanour of a woman practising godliness in both appearance & what she may inadvertently convey to men.
