    Betty,

    Here is my understanding of Colossians 3:5. Interesting, it says mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;

    Mortify means put to death. It means to allow the members of your body and its desires to die. Stop trying to revive them. Stop trying to reach back into the old life. You're losing desire for those old things, so let it die.

    And he gives us a list of 5 things:

    Fornication, which is sexual immorality. Uncleanness, which is all sexual impureness. Inordinate affection, which is physical passion.

    (Evil concupiscence), which means evil mental desires.

    And covetousness, which we call greed. And the word covetousness literally in the Greek means the desire to have more. Being greedy and covetous is the desire to have more than what you have.

    And notice what he calls it: which is idolatry:

    It's a form of worship and it's idolatry toward God to be greedy and have the desire to have more than what God has given you.

    Paul gives us the cause in Verse 6.

    Hope this helps!

    Wesley's Notes for Colossians 3:5

    3:5 Mortify therefore - Put to death, slay with a continued stroke. Your members - Which together make up the body of sin. Which are upon the earth - Where they find their nourishment. Uncleanness - In act, word, or thought. Inordinate affection - Every passion which does not flow from and lead to the love of God. Evil desire - The desire of the flesh, the desire of the eye, and the pride of life. Covetousness - According to the derivation of the word, means the desire of having more, or of any thing independent on God. Which is idolatry - Properly and directly; for it is giving the heart to a creature.

    People's Bible Notes for Colossians 3:5

    Col 3:5 Mortify therefore your members. The Greek word "nekroo", rendered "moritfy", is stronger. It means "put to death". Since you died to the world and the flesh, slay also the earthly lusts and passions which belong to the flesh. They belong to the old nature, not to the new creature. Uncleanness. Every kind of impure act. Inordinate affection. Lustful passion. Covetousness. See PNT "Eph

    Elsewhere the word is translated simply as lust. Here it seems to imply obsessive sinful desire.
