    Hi,

Can someone help me understand 2 Corinthians 3:6....what did Paul meam when he said the letter killeth?
  • Chris - In Reply on Numbers 10 - 3 years ago
The Apostle Paul is writing about his authority to bring the Corinthians teaching from God's Word & this he did through the Holy Spirit Who makes God's Word real & applicable by writing it in our hearts & not on tablets of stone.

When Paul was first Saul the Pharisee, his teaching came from both the Law of God & the traditions of men (i.e. Rabbinical teaching). He now writes that he no longer teaches that, nor can he, as the new life he has in Christ urges him to proclaim the message of the New Covenant & not the Old. What was the teaching under the Old Covenant? That man (the Jew), had to note every written Command of God ("the letter of the Law"), & had to given mental assent to it & obey it to the letter. If he failed, he suffered terribly. This was because the Law was given to show them how sinful they were, how they couldn't find complete deliverance from sin, & therefore any attempt to obey the Law fully would never work & would only result in their death/judgement.

But, writes Paul, unlike the Letter of the Law, the Spirit of God Who writes God's Laws upon our hearts, enables us to know what is sin & what is not, what pleases God & what doesn't, or how to use discernment over many things that come to us. And so our immediate confession to God when we fail Him & sin, sees the efficacy (continual application) of Christ's Blood for our cleansing & an assured, joyful heart. The Jews never had that experience, because the Law wasn't designed for that - it only brought him death & not life. But Jesus said, "I am come that they might have LIFE, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10.

    how can I get saved

Shana, on this Site's Main Page, find the word "More" on the Top line. Click on it & scroll down to "How to become a Christian".

Remember, it's not just going through some formula to be saved from sin - salvation comes from a deep sorrow for your sin & your desire to turn away from such a life & finding forgiveness & a new life only through Jesus, God's Son. Read those verses given there & if you don't understand anything, please write again so that we can explain it to you. It is your full belief in what God has done for you that gives you salvation & NOT by what you can do for God. We can never do anything that could cause God to forgive us - He could only forgive us on His Terms & that is, His Son gave His Life in your place so you could be forgiven. Think deeply on these things & follow through with a true repentant heart before God. He will hear your cry to Him & He will forgive you.

John 6:37: "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." You can rest on that Promise directly from Jesus to you.

    Shana,

    "how can I get saved"

But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:6-13

You "getting it" is between you and God. When you not only understand, but believe/fully trust he paid for all your sins, he makes himself known to you personally. The confidence that you will have in that relationship is something only you can say is sure. Nobody can tell you, you are saved, and when you are saved, nobody can take that reality away from you.

Give God a call, it's toll free for you, because Jesus paid it all.

Its not always easy to put into words how you feel about God ,Jesus and the Truth about your own faith and salvation ,some people find it easier than others ,for me its a very personal thing ,often people ,usually atheists ,ask me about it in a very challenging or confrontational way and they dont get one word out of me ,i can tell they interprit my silence as some sort of victory for themselves ,even among other believers i prefer to keep my chat light ,my faith has been a long time developing and is most precious to me ,i dont feel the need to explain it or justify it im just very very thankfull that God has allowed me a measure of understanding and He has allowed me to know that i am never and have never been without Him .

    Sacha,

"about your own faith and salvation" "how you feel about God"

Your own faith is what you trust to be true. Salvation is a plan that God has revealed in his word.

Sometimes people use the word feel in place of understand. In talking to other people it is always easier if you are explaining what you understand. How about you telling me what you understand to be the way God saves people. Of course you "don't have to", but Jesus has explained that "Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house." If what you have is of God, he wants you to shine, and not be uncomfortable or unable to talk about it.

Hi Mild Bill ,i always appreciate your posts ,if i start to tell you of my faith i may never shut up ! At the moment im recovering from coronavirus so i dont have much energy to concentrate and type but maybe when im fully recovered ,i will say that like many people ive had some tough patches in my life and i have some times been my own worst enemy but God has shown me enormous mercy generosity and kindness all through my life and i know that if it wasnt for His love and protection and guidance i would either be dead many years ago or insane or even worse ! His love is overwhelming to me and i cant find the words .

    Amen Mild Bill.

Jesus is in the midst of the candlesticks, the light proceeds from us shines on him.

Revelation 1:13 (KJV) And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
