"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES:" 1Co 15:3-4

There are lots of Old Testament Scriptures that refer to a suffering and dying Messiah but I've often wondered where is it recorded "that he rose again the third day ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES"

This creed probably started being used by Christians within months of Jesus' resurrection. There were no New Testament writings at that time. "The Scriptures" referred to the Jewish writings, The Law and The Prophets.

I'll share some of my ideas as I hear about yours.

Well Richard identified 3 Scriptural allusions supporting "that he rose again the third day ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES," and Adam echoed 1 of those 3.

This one I got from Chuck Missler. I am no Hebrew scholar and it took one to find this one. You might not find it as compelling as the 3 from Richard.

"Then she let them down by a CORD through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and HIDE YOURSELVES THERE THREE DAYS, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way. And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear. Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this LINE of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee." Jos 2:15-18

    CORD H2256 chebel

also ruin: - band, coast, company, cord, country, destruction, line, lot, pain, pang, portion, region, rope, snare, sorrow, tackling.

    LINE H8615 tiqvh

figuratively expectancy: - expectation ([-ted]), hope, live, thing that I long for.

So between CORD (ruin, pain, sorrow) and LINE (expectation, hope)

    is HIDE...THREE DAYS

This passage is an allusion, by The Holy Spirit, to the sorrow of the cross, three days in the grave and the hope of the resurrection: "ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES"

This event occurs just prior to the people of Israel crossing the Jordan and entering The Promised Land.

Here is a differentiation that I think is important to keep in mind.

There is ONE interpretation of Joshua 2:13-20. Any passage has ONE INTERPRETATION not many. It is not the same as this typology or picture of Jesus rising on the third day. The interpretation would be what a reader would have understood in 1300 BC or 20 AD. The correct interpretation is the message that the writer meant to convey not the interpretation you want to give it. There may be an additional message in a typology but typology is not allegory, which is reading into the text what is not there as the interpretation. For instance, studying Leviticus may be difficult apart from typology, but the typology does not change the meaning of what the Ark of the Covenant was to an OT believer.

    1 Corinthians 15:4

    Acts 10:40

    Luke 24:7

    Luke 18:33

    Matthew 20:19

    Matthew 17:23

    Luke 24:46

    Luke 24:21

This is only a few of the instances. Is someone doubting that Jesus was risen on the third day or something? The Bible says it all over the place, so if someone is trying to claim otherwise, they have a whole mountain of scripture against them.

Adam, none of the New Testament had been written when this creed was first spoken, just a short time after The Resurrection. The only "Scriptures" they had would have would have been the writings that we know as The Old Testament.

    Hosea 6:2

    Hello brother Skip,

As your post interested me to look into this. There seems to be no exact Scripture, in the OT, of the Messiah rising on the third day. What I found was there being three parallels in the OT Jesus may have been referring to.

The First being a parallel to Abraham being commanded to sacrifice his "only" son Isaac. When hearing this his son became dead to him. Then on the third day when he was about to offer him in sacrifice the angel of the Lord stopped him. Then Isaac being alive to him again. Genesis 22:1-12

Then next being a parallel to Jonah being three days, and nights, in the whales belly. Jonah 1:17. Showing that he was not living, but had died, is Jonah crying "out of the belly of hell or "sheol"I cried". Then Jonah 2:20 where the fish spit him up and being revived, or alive, after three days.

The last is a parallel to Israel being raised on the third day. Hosea 6:1-2.

As you may know all of these things already as you are a very wise man in Scripture. I just thought to look into and post what I found to you.

Hope that may help some. God Bless you brother.

Oops. Not Jonah 2:20, Jonah 2:10.
  • SkipVought - In Reply on Psalms 19 - 3 years ago
    Yes, Richard

And Jesus said, "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." Mat 12:40

    Richard,

It always warms my heart when people search The Holy Scriptures and know The Holy Scriptures that are to make you wise unto salvation. A true Bearan: Acts 17-10-11.

    Those are three good examples!

I like that you see that Abraham reckoned that Isaac was dead on the first day and he received him back on the third day. Heb 11:17-19. His faith is exemplified when he told his servants that "I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you." Gen 22:5.

Thanks for your swift reply. Please post again if you think of any other Scriptures. I still have other possibilities.

    Hello Skip,

The Lord is so amazing. Tonight I just opened my Bible and read as sometimes I do just to let the Holy Spirit guide me. I was reading in 1 Samuel about the life of David. I really can't say it has any correlation to Jesus rising on the third day but as soon as I read it I thought of you and how it connects. In "his spirit came again to him" and "three days and three nights". 1 Samuel 30:12

I'm sure that this spoke to your heart. Thanks for sharing.

I appreciate your very kind replies my brother.

You have noted another interesting parallel, with the details, in Joshua 2:15-18. Wonderful!

    God Bless you Skip.
