    the Scriptures; v.4 = The word "Scriptures" (note the plurality) translate from the Greek noun root (transliterated "graphe"; pronounced "graf-AY"), and from which the English language derives the elements " - graph" or "grapho - ", both of which speak of written words to convey a message or provide information.

    The singular word "Scripture" occurs approximately thirty-one times in the New Testament. The singular usage usually speaks of a particular passage and a specific context within the whole.

    The plural usage refers to all of the whole Body of GOD's Inspired Word. When Paul wrote this verse, he most assuredly referred to the Body of Scriptures now referred to as the Old Testament, and of which includes the Body of GOD's Promises "by HIS prophets" (cp. Lu. 1:70; Ac. 3:18 & 21; Rom. 1:2; Eph. 3:5).

    This plurality includes

    + "all the Scriptures" (Lu. 24:27);

    + the combined "Scriptures of the [individual]

    prophets" ( Rom. 16:26); and

    + "other Scriptures" ( 2Pet. 3:16).
