In Phillippians 4:8 where it says "whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest" and to think on those things, does that mean that reading a fiction book or something like that is wrong because it's fake?

To JB, on Revelation 1; Compare our hearts to a landfill, the more garbage we put in the more it fills up, untill it flows out the top. We can try to cover up the garbage but the stinch is still there. Were better off if we never put the trash in there! An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. God Bless!

    Jb,

Here's what it is referring to in Philippians 4:8:

It says, whatsoever things are true: that is truth. Think about things that are the truth, especially in Christ.

Secondly, whatsoever things are honest: the word honest means something that is honorable and reverent toward God. If it honors the Lord!

Whatsoever things are just: that's the word for righteousness. And it means those things that are right with God.

Whatsoever things are pure: this word comes from the word for separation. And it means concentrate or think on those things that are separated from the corruption of the world, things that are pure, unmixed with the world.

Whatsoever things are lovely: that is whatever things that are pleasing from a spiritual perspective.

Whatsoever things are of good report: this word comes from the word fame. So when people come and give you a report about somebody else, only listen to reports that are of good report that fits in with everything else, pure, pleasing spiritually. Don't listen to the negative reports.

He says if there be any virtue, (ARETE), and it means character, anything for the development of your character. And if there be any praise to God, the command is to think on these things.

The Greek word for think is LOGIZESTHE, and it is where we get our word logic from, the reasoning processes. It is a Present Imperative which means continue to set your reasonings and your thoughts on these things.

We have control over what we meditate on and focus on. But we sometimes worry to the point of sickness because we want to handle things ourselves. We're supposed to just trust the Lord with it, but we don't want to let go of it, we want to worry about it, you know? It's like if I let God take care of it then it might not get done right, so I've got to do it.

Hi Jb ,i read novels (fiction) ,i cant remember the last time i read a 'modern' novel ,this is not prohibited for Christians , most of the stuff i read is quite old and isnt rude or violent ,i usually like to know a bit about the author before i read anything by them ,i believe as long as you are choosey and discerning its ok but others may disagree ,my favourite writers are :tolstoy ,dostoyevsky ,edith wharton ,kurt vonegut and im hoping to read les miserables by victor hugo soon ,theres lots of good stuff out there but its best to do a bit of research first ,franz kafka is also a bit good ,albert camus etc etc etc ,make sure you dont neglect your Bible though ! I always read the Bible before i read my novel and some times i get so engrossed in the Bible i neglect to read my novel !
