The ecumenical movement has been around for a long time now. This movement talks about unity among believers which sounds great, but if the goal is to bring all denominations and religions together as one, then that is something we must be cautious about.
Ephesians 4:3 says, "Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace."
This tells us to keep the unity. We're already united in Christ. We don't have to make the unity. We're already united. We have to keep the unity. Satan is trying to divide the unity. And even if he succeeds in the human to get us to quarrel and have our differences or whatever, we still have unity in the Spirit. We're still one in Christ.
The theme of Philippians is about fellowship, and what it takes for a believer to have fellowship with other believers. That's the problem that Paul dealt with a lot. We are to tolerate one another in the love of Christ. We are to make it a top priority to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
But to bring all denominations together as one is a bad idea because it will cause problems. In 1 Corinthians 11:19, it says that there must be heresies among us and that division is necessary. The word heresy comes from the root word that means choice. That's what heresy is. It's when I choose to believe that the bible is teaching something that's not in the bible.
Most of the church today is made up of heresies and that's what divides one church from another church. It's why we have so many different denominations. We go over the same scriptures, and one side says "We believe that it says this," and another side will say "Well, we believe it means this!"
It says for it is necessary for there to be heresies. It's interesting that Paul didn't say "There shouldn't be any heresies." There have to be heresies in the church. Why? So that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. Did you know that God ordains division?
Hi Rawlie, I have visited many different denominations and my opinion is denominations divide the body of Christ. It turns the believers into belonging to a named religion, they hold the name of their denomination in pride saying I am a______, or I am a______, not I am a believer in Jesus Christ. We make it like colors, I like red, you like green, and she likes blue, who's right where is truth? The truth turns into an opinion or preference not what is true. I know there are Councils of Churches working to bring unity in Christianity. The churches when the scriptures were written had names of the cities, they were not named by the different beliefs they had. The one verse in the chapter you referred, I feel people did not observe so they created each different denomination.

I do not know any scripture for ecumenism.
