Can a person who believes in God, believes in Jesus, believes the bible is true, and goes to church still be considered an atheist? I would love to hear some of your thoughts about who an atheist is before I share my thoughts on the word atheist.

Jesse Depending on the atheist you talk to they basically don't believe in anything God or gods, which is by pure reasoning impossible, even in the Bible pagans had gods of wood stone nature animals planets etc. It's a very interesting conversation piece. Basic satanism teaches do what you will harm no others, but they break there own rules when things don't go their way. All world wisdom.

    Brother Spencer/Sister Dianne,

First of all, I want to say that I did not ask this question to trip anyone up, nor to puff myself up. I asked because I was interested in what comes to others minds when they hear the word atheist. And this is something I learned years ago when I was studying and learning Koine Greek.

If someone were to ask me years ago what an atheist is, my response would be that it is someone who doesn't believe in God. And that is true. But it goes beyond that. So I asked the question here, can a person who believes in God be an atheist. My answer to that today would be yes.

Here's why I say that. Our English word atheist comes from a compound Greek word. In the Greek, it is the word A-THEOS, pronounced Ah-Theos. This word literally means without God, "a" means without, and Theos means God. So an atheist is someone who is without God, someone who has not yet been born of His Spirit, regardless of what they believe or don't believe.

So a person can be in church, they can believe in God, believe the word of God is true, participate in church, act and look like everyone else, but still be an atheist. There are many in our churches today that have never surrendered their lives to Christ, never been born of His Spirit, and even though they believe in God and the bible, they are still without God, meaning they are atheist.

Is it correct to say that an atheist is someone who doesn't believe in God? Yes it is. But it is also correct to say that a person who believes in God but has never been born of His Spirit, that person also is an atheist.

My response today if asked to give a definition of who an atheist is would simply be someone who is without God, not simply a person who doesn't believe in God. That's what I wanted to share. Thank you both for responding!

    Thanks Brother Jesse.

I've heard J vernon Mcgee define that as well. That's Enlightening.

An Atheist and Hypocrite is one of the Same.

    God bless.

Jesse Not disputing your reasoning but an atheist will never admit to the God and Father of our lord Jesus Christ there safe statement will always be some kind of Higher power, but in reality they are without our God because there God is Romans 1:21-23 they elevated human reasoning I.E. what they imagine God to be in their minds. In reality a true atheist will tell you they don't believe in any so called control power. Its not a trick questions but there are a few correct answers.

    Dianne,

I never sensed that you were disputing what I shared at all. I also agree with what you said in that "a true atheist will tell you they don't believe in any so-called control power." I agree with that. But who is a true atheist? By the literal meaning of the word, which I was sharing, it literally means "Without God." That tells me that even a person who believes in God but has never been born of His Spirit, no Spiritual birth, meaning Christ does not dwell in them, that person is without God. And that fits the literal definition of the word. That person is no different than the person who flat-out rejects God. The only difference is one says they believe and the other says they don't believe. But they are both atheists (Without God), at least according to the literal meaning of the word.

I think we would both agree that a person who dies in the state of being an atheist will not spend eternity with our Lord. Why? It's because that person never had God in their life. That's what it means to be an atheist. That person is A-THEOS, without God. But the person who says they believe in God but never surrenders their life to Christ, if they die in that state of never surrendering their life to Jesus Christ, they have also died without God, and they are no different than the other person, both being atheist.

I just wanted to share the literal meaning of the word atheist and where the word comes from. The literal definition is "Without God." So that can apply to both a person who believes in God just the same as it does to a person who refuses to believe in God.

Again, it is correct to say that a person who does not believe in God is an atheist. That is a true statement. But it is also correct to say that the person who believes in God, but is void of His indwelling Spirit, it's also correct to say that person is without God, and therefore also an atheist. Hopefully, I am not confusing anyone.

Jesse I fully agree I've talked to tons of people , that believe there is a God or believe in god But Never go to His word or do what His word says, thats is mental accent to the truth, more of a hearer not a doer.

Brother Jesse. Thank you for that 'bit' of enlightenment. When I saw your question yesterday, I think I spent a good half hour working through it in my mind, digging into its furthest recesses for a suitable answer - & all I found was darkness & a nagging ache. Thank you very much!

Apart from the general understanding of an 'atheist', I found after all that, I had no answer to give you. The only thought that came to me, was if that 'atheist', who believed in God, Jesus & the Bible, was anything different to what we understand him to be, then he must believe that he was a god-type himself & therefore reinterpreting everything else keeping himself as the focus & place of accountability. But I see, that I missed altogether the 'complete' meaning of a-theist as you have wisely shared.

So, I'll keep it in the back of my mind, as there are plenty of spaces now since cleaning everything out because of your question, but if I do engage in conversation with an atheist (in or outside of the Church), I wonder whether he would think any differently to what is generally understood, & I might even leave him totally dumbfounded if I should suggest this 'added' meaning. With 'a-theist', I thought of 'a-millenialist', therefore the word 'no' seemed most appropriate in both examples. I will need to add 'without' to its meaning. Again, thanks for the extra 'light' - I truly needed it.

From what I've read, most of your spiritual worth us wanting. The arrogance of ego surrounds you and all you say. You are a leader of one, master of none. Take the reflections advise and turn inward, soy.

    Hi Brother Jesse.

Some Atheist seem to be saying, "I don't believe there's a God and I hate him.
