    I don't understand verse21 of the scripture
  • S Spencer - In Reply on John 14 - 3 years ago
    Rejoice.

Let's take it from verse 10,

And I will share what I believe verse 12 means.

In verses 10 and 11 Here Jesus says he's in the Father and the Father is in him, And Jesus contribute the work to the Father,

In verse 12 The work that Jesus does and the greater here mentioned here is not greater in quality, It's greater in volume.

    That's why Jesus said

BECAUSE I GO UNTO MY FATHER.

Jesus had to go to the Father before he sent the Holyspirit to dwell in them.

Luke 24:49. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, UNTIL YE BE ENDUED WITH POWER FROM ON HIGH.

That power was the Holyspirit and the Apostles ministered with that Power on display to the World.

John 14:10-12. Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but THE FATHER THAT DWELLETH IN ME, HE DOETH THE WORKS.

11: Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

12: Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, THE WORKS THAT I DO SHALL HE DO ALSO; and GREATER WORKS THAN THESE SHALL HE DO; BECAUSE I GO UNTO MY FATHER.

    God bless.

    Brother Spencer,

Your statement on John 14:12 was perfect, Amen!

Verily, verily, I say unto you, and any time we see the words "verily, verily, it means establishment of a spiritual truth. He that believeth on me, literally INTO ME, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

The term "greater," because there's many different views as to what greater means, and a lot of people want it mean greater works in that you will do more than what Jesus did. It is called the genitive of quantity, not genitive of quality because there is no such thing. It is called the genitive of quantity.

In other words, more greater works in the sense of there will be more of them because God at that time was limited and located in the person of Jesus Christ, but when Jesus leaves and sends His Spirit, His Spirit will now indwell all of His people.

And Jesus will be working through His people, thousands, millions of them all over the world, genitive of quantity.
  • S Spencer - In Reply on John 14 - 3 years ago
    Thanks Brother Jesse.

Amen The power which was performing those works is working in many believers in diverse ways, so the volume has ramped up, it is the quantity not quality as you said.

And Jesus was not displaying gifts, He was displaying Power given to him by the Father.

John 14:10-11. Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

I have heard several people across the years say we can do greater things than Jesus, when reading that verse, One guy even taught a class and asked when you look in the mirror who do you see? I knew where he was going with this so I said an unworthy sinner saved by the grace of God. He said I was wrong, you are seeing Jesus. You can do the miracles Jesus did if you prayed to the father and it happens all the time! "We can do greater things than Jesus!"

I asked him can a man raise himself from the dead?

John 10:17-18. Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. ( I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.) This commandment have I received of my Father.

Even the Apostles could not do that.

    God bless.

S Spencer I will be clearer from now on never mean't greater in ability that's impossible. First mistake I ever made in my life. NOT!
  • S Spencer - In Reply on John 14 - 3 years ago
    Hi Sister Dianne.

Yes, I know you didn't say greater in ability,

but I just wanted to touch on that while this verse is presented because there's some out there that use that verse in that way.

    God bless.

Sir I never stated or implied more in quality when sharing that subject matter, whats interesting to me on this site is what gets replied to and what doesn't. But there again that's par for the course.

Different people come in here at different times. It's all free to whosoever will. Myself, I may be deep studying for days. I get inside my closet, under the clothes and pray, some days. Once I found out what a blessing it is to be shut up with the Holy Spirit; you couldn't get me out of there.

I'm a career single, so I can be attentive to the Lords time. I made that choice and I'm happy with it. If that makes me weird, so be it. I guess I kinda know how John (the Baptist) felt. I don't eat grasshoppers but I do fast regularly. It's because I'm busy, involved in what the Lord is doing.

Not everyone is retired as I am. They're working jobs, got children and grandchildren; lawns to mow, honey-do's, to do.

The only thing I have trouble doing, is spending time in front of the TV. If I do, I pray that He will help me see the stories He wants me to see.

I come in here to answer questions. Your questions and concerns fill my prayer time every day. It is my pleasure to try and be helpful.

All our teachers, preachers, prophetically gifted, pastors who are gifted to care for sheep and carry the lambs in prayer, are ALL NEEDED. WE ARE THE BODY OF CHRIST :)

His eyes, ears, hands, feet to carry the Gospel, knees to bend in Prayer; and so much more.

We need every member doing what The Holy Spirit has carefully gifted us for. God bless all those that give of their wealth to the poor. By wealth, that can mean many things.

The one thing I'm sure of is that if we get puffed up over our greatness, that the Holy Spirit will let us know. That's how we know we are Beloved Children of God.

We are only as great as our Praise and Worship TO GOD is. It frees us in the spirit. It's not a chore. It's a privilege.

Psalm 136 is a song of worship and praise to show us how. I modify it sometimes to fit my own life and times when I knew God was helping me. We need to remember the past, present and future.

Let's love people like Jesus did, does.

S Spencer This is not to disagree my question is do you believe that what Jesus Christ said there was just for the disciples only or for anyone who believes in Him after receiving The Gift of Holy Spirit from God.
  • S Spencer - In Reply on John 14 - 3 years ago
    Hi Dianne.

Sorry it took so long to respond to you, I am working on my honey do list.

The works Jesus is talking about in John 14:12. Is his miracles and being that he will gift his disciples with the Holyspirit shortly after his death, to work and perform these same miracles, as Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:10. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

And he also said in Galatians 2:8. (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) The apostles was given the Holyspirit and a measure of grace to take to the whole world to lay down the foundation that we are to build on. Paul said this grace was mighty in him. By the Holyspirit they was able to raise the dead!

But with all that being said that's not what he wanted the outside world to gaze upon when determining whether they was a follower of him or not. Here is what he wanted the world to see, which was given by the same spirit.

John 13:34-35. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. This was also working mightily in them.

Here is another example of what the spirit had to do in their lives. listen to the Lord after Peter forbid him to was his feet but then allowed it to be so.

John 13:12-15. So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

("Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.")

For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

There is a lesson in humility.

    God bless.

Sister Dianne, may CHRIST IN US grace us with HIS wisdom and HIS understanding.

    I'm intruding into your's and S Spencer's discussion:

I BELIEVE Jesus (first coming in the flesh) and his apostles were given power to perform miracles that could be seen in the flesh. Raising the dead, making the blind see, the deaf hear, the lame walk.

FIRST the natural (seen), then (second) the SPIRITUAL (unseen):

I BELIEVE Jesus (the second coming in the HOLY SPIRIT) in his SAINTS, are given this same power; but the Spirit performing these miracles through the labour of his SAINTS, CANNOT be seen. Raising the dead (in trespasses and making them alive in Christ, making the blind see, the deaf hear, the lame walk.

Same POWER, SAME MIRACLE, one can be seen (in flesh), the other can't be seen (in Spirit).

Food for thought, the Spirit reveals.

P.S. I don't consider on this website anybody intruding, just additional input to consider.I don't take it personally but on the word I want to take it to heart. God Bless
  • Dianne - In Reply on John 14 - 3 years ago
Brother I agree all the miracles are in the category of the senses it is spirit power that enables the ability. Forgive me if I'm not understanding you correctly. We see the effect of the operation of the God given ability but not the source, that's the manifestation of Pneuma Hagion or Holy Spirit. God Bless

In John 14 Jesus Christ is sharing the things that will become and now are available when an individual confesse Romans 10:9+10 and believes it in their hearts and does the will of God which is His Word, His Spirit takes up resident LITERALLY in our bodies and He begins to make the way He operates and wants you to do known. The more you walk the more He makes known. The real mind blower is verse 12 and this guy raised the dead, and He said us who believe will do greater works than he did. Now we can believe it or not.
