I have been told over and over by a brother in-law that if I don't observe the Sabbath every Saturday that I am going straight to hell. What is your belief or thought on this
The Sabbath is and has always been the seventh day of the week, Constantine made a Sunday law in 321 A.D. The Roman Catholic Church at the Council of Laodicea - 364 A.D, this council was held to stop the Sabbath-keeping tendencies in the Eastern Roman Empire. The Council of Laodicea (Nicolaitans), produced sixty rulings, or canons, covering a broad range of topics. Doctrines other than Sunday were written by them and the penalties for not obeying them that has continued until today.
The New Testament tells us that trying to seek justification before God by keeping any part of the law automatically makes us responsible to keep the entire law. You will either stand before God and be judged by the law, or you will be established in the righteousness that comes by faith in Jesus Christ. Consider the following verses.
Read these and show your brother-in-law, ( Romans 3:20-24) ( Romans 14:2-6,13) ( Galatians 3:11-13) ( Colossians 2:11-16) There are more scripture you can find.
Regardless of what you may believe, man does not have the authority to change any law that God made and Jesus Christ fulfilled, especially how they changed it and the reason it was changed, but you cannot call Sunday the Sabbath. We are not to judge anyone for going to a church on Sunday or any day of the week. We are to worship in spirit regardless of where or what day, hopefully, every day. "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law".
No man can judge that you will go to hell, only God can make that final judgement call.
It is true, God gave man the Sabbath Day as a gift to rest our bodies and minds, and set aside and spend special time giving thanks to our creator. It has been well known and celebrated throughout history that the Sabbath Day referred to by God has been observed on Saturday the last day of the week. No man can change what God gave as a 4th commandment.
Jesus said below:
John 14:15
"If ye love me, keep my commandments."
So yes, God encourages his children to keep his 10 commandments.
colossians 2:8-17. beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after christ.
for in him dwelleth all the fulness of the godhead bodily.
and ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of christ:
buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of god, who hath raised him from the dead.
and you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
( blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; )
and having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
( let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the [ sabbath days:] )
which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of christ.
Your brother-in-law is a fear monger. The statutes have changed. In 312 AD Constantine changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. Keep the Sabbath in your heart.
Ask him when the Jewish Sabbath starts/ends, and if he says anything other than "Friday at sundown through Saturday at sundown", put him in his place. Let me know how it works out.
Thank you for responding and for blessing me with the word. Like I was saying my brother in-law believes that a Christian must keep the Sabbath to be saved ,but to fill you in on some other things concerning my brother in-law. I'm guessing that he thinks he is Jewish and he doesn't believe in the Holy Spirit and he also believes that Jesus was a prophet or teacher and that we will have our own planet to rule. I believe totally different. I believe that Jesus is my Savior and I believe in the trinity ( the Father , the Son & the Holy Spirit.

a shadow is just a figure of what is actual.
