I was under the impression Adam's line was continually engaged in incest.
Did God make more humans other than Adam & Eve in the same manner, in different locations? How many people in total did God create? Who were they and what is their story? Why are only Adam and Eve's creation celebrated, and not the others?
I will research it myself, but for now, let's see what this blog has to say about it.
The account in Genesis says that when God made man, He formed an individual man of the dust of the earth, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, so that he became a living soul. Gen. 2:7.
When the female of the human species was created, the Lord caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, took one of the man's ribs, and closed up the flesh out of which it was taken, and fashioned a woman out of the rib. Gen. 2:21,22.
Later in the account about these two individuals, the man gives his wife the name Eve (the name in Hebrew is related to the word for life) because she is the mother of all living. That is, she is the ancestress of all humans who have ever lived. Gen. 3:20.
Were the wives of Cain, Abel, and Seth their sisters? Evidently so. If these three men were immediately born to Eve as her sons, she must also have been the immediate mother of their wives, since at this point in the history of the human race, there was no other woman to give birth to their wives. To say otherwise is to tell this account differently from what is in the Bible.
ADAM and EVES' OTHER CHILDREN - In Reply - 3 years ago
Genesis 5
1. This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;
2. Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
3. And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:
4. And the days of Adam AFTER he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat [more] SONS AND DAUGHTERS.
In most of the Bible's Geneology Lists, you will note that as a rule the names of daughters were NOT recorded,
UNLESS there was a prophetic reason to record their names.
We don't know how much time elapsed between Seths birth; and many more children Adam and Eve gave birth to.
Think about it. The genepool of mankind was new and strong. It wasn't illegal for 1st cousins to wed 2nd or 3rd cousins. Maybe you should research middle eastern marriage traditions.
This was tolerated until after the Flood, until the Ten Commandments were given. Also the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy were written by Moses.
Maybe we should check out the customs before we think of words like 'incest'. The danger here is: judging.
Irregardless of how many people were born into earth, by the time of NOAH, only 8 souls survived the flood, on the Ark. That is recorded.
Unless Orthodox Jewish religion indicates differently, I vote we leave this topic alone.
