Hello All . Can some one help me with this question ? In Revelation Ch 22 V8 & 9 John goes to worship the angel and the angel tells him not to and basically says that he is a human so John shouldn't worship him John should only worship God . I know that some times angels can just be humans but John wouldn't have attempted to worship this angel if it just looked like a human would be ? Surely John would only have tried to worship the angel if it looked like a heavenly being . So why does the angel say what it or he says in Ch 9 ? I have read the Bible quite a few times but this thing always bugs me .

Only Gabriel or Michael speaks that way. Use the search box to look up scriptures with their names.

Dear "Cassidy" 22:9Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

We have different word in translations on Revelation 22:9 co-servant is not a human. fellowservant is not necessary a human.

U know we have Only One God an He is God and Him we shall worship. Not anybody else. I reed this today:

Colossians 2:6 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

17Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

18Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

I'll hope this will help u Love u in Christ.

Thank you for your help . I know we shouldn't worship any one except God . I am more confused by the angels reply than by any thing else . Is the angel a heavenly being or a human being ? John seems to think it's a heavenly being but the words that the angel uses seem to imply a human being . I know it doesn't really matter but it bugs me . Thanks again .

    Hi Cassidy,

To me, Revelation 22:9 reads that John was interacting with a (resurrected human) fellow servant, a brethren of the other prophets and a Christ/God follower on a level consistent with the Apostle John himself. So, essentially asking John to not worship him, but to worship God.

    God Bless.

Thank you brother Dan . I'm inclined to agree with you except for one thing . I don't believe that the resurrection has taken place yet . I believe that will happen when Christ returns to earth . So you can see my confusion . Thanks again for your answer .

    Hello Cassidy,

Here's what I can share with you. Hopefully this helps.

Revelation 22:8 was probably a natural response by John. After going through all of this, and getting to see and experience all these things in the spirit, John falls down to worship at the feet of the angel.

Revelation 22:9: Then he (the angel) says unto me, See thou do it not: for I am your fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book:

And then the angel gives a command: Worship God. Why would an angel say this?

At the end of Hebrews chapter 1, it says the angels are ministering spirits to those who belong to Christ, to those who are saved. So the angels see themselves as part of God's work among us. And so this angel says "Don't worship me. I'm just a messenger like you are. But rather, worship God."

It's kind of interesting because even from the Old Testament, you cannot worship anybody but God. But yet, after the resurrection of Christ in John chapter 20, when Jesus appeared to the disciples behind closed doors, and Thomas was with them, Thomas sees Him and says "My Lord, and my God."

Well, if He's not Lord and God, then that's blasphemy. But Jesus didn't tell Thomas "Hey, you shouldn't say that Thomas. I'm just the Son. I'm not God." No, Jesus received Thomas' worship because He is God. Worship Him!

    Again, I hope this helps!

    @Jasse

    Hi Jesse

Did you notice the phrase '' I am of your fellow servant and of thy brethren the prophets ''? This is a human being not a ministering spirit. For angels are not prophets. The word angel is interchangeably used to mean God's messages which are both ministering spirits and people. for this case it is a person not a ministering spirit
  • Cassidy - In Reply - 3 years ago
Thank you Ferdinand . Your explanation is very clear and I'm inclined to agree with you though I'm not 100 per cent convinced , or I wouldn't have asked what others think but your way of thinking seems the most likely to me . Thank you .

Hello Christian friend . Thank you for your answer . I think I didn't ask properly . It wasn't really the worship God bit I was asking about sorry . I was confused by the angel saying that he was of John's brethren and the prophets , was the angel a heavenly being or was he a human messenger like the prophets were ? John would not have attempted to worship him unless he looked like a heavenly being but he says he's not which implies he was a human messenger . Any way , it always confuses me slightly . Thanks again .

Hi Cassidy. Jesse has shared some very good thoughts for you. If I may expand on them, as I perceive these verses. If you look at Revelation 1:1, we read, "The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it BY HIS ANGEL unto his servant John".

This Book is what the risen Jesus, the Son of God, wanted to show to John & then John to deliver the message to us. Jesus did by passing His Message (i.e. the whole Book of the Revelation) via His angel (we're not told his name). So when you read Revelation 22:8,9, you can well imagine the state of ecstasy that John was already in because of the volume & intensity of those visions, which he could barely comprehend & even make sense of. Therefore, I see John as almost losing his self-awareness because of being in rapture, that he fell to the ground to pay homage to the deliverer of those visions, rather than to the Author of them. But the angel quickly retorts, 'Don't be foolish & do such a thing, rather worship & thank God; for I am only the messenger, as the prophets of old were, doing the Will & Work of God.' My apologies for this rendering; just wanted to share how I understand this passage whenever I come to it. Yes, I believe the angel was a 'heavenly being', of similar state as the other angels, & as the others from Earth in their glorified state.

I understand exactly what you are saying and thankyou for your reply . The fact that I received so many varied answers makes me think that just maybe I'm not the only one who isn't 100 per cent sure about this . Revelation is a hard book for me . Some things are so clear and obvious and other times I feel like I'm looking into a pile of mud ! Nevermind , we will know all in the end of days . Thank you .

    Brother Chris,

Thank you so much. I had just spent some time going back through Revelation chapter 22, and then to Revelation 1:1, mainly to refresh my memory of the order in which these things were revealed to John. There are actually 4 steps mixed in there:

God gave it to Christ, Christ gave it to His angel, which is very interesting. The angel gives the revelation to John, in order for John to give it to the servants of God.

I have always understood angels to be spirit beings, not human. Anyway, I wanted to share a little more with Cassidy, but for some reason, my thoughts were as though they were going through a blender and I was unsure on what else to say. And then I read your post and it was perfect. I don't think I could add anything else. Thanks again my brother!

When he says he is of John's brethren, he is simply saying that he is a fellowservant or worshipper of Christ. All true believers are brothers and sisters in Christ. Christ is the head, and we are the members of his body.
  • Cassidy - In Reply - 3 years ago
Would an angel , a heavenly being consider itself a brethren ? An angel is an immortal being not sinful flesh like us . Brethren is an earthly familial fleshly word isn't it ? For all of these excellent replies , including yours , I say thank you but I'm not sure I'm any wiser . Lots of different answers makes me think I'm not the only one who isn't 100 per cent sure . Thank you for your excellent reply , I shall keep it in mind .

Sister Cassidy, may CHRIST IN US grace us with HIS wisdom and HIS understanding.

I don't know if you know THE ANGEL (messenger) OF THE LORD (Father) in the old testament WAS and IS CHRIST.

Romans 8:29 ... the image of Christ (angel of the Lord)....firstborn among MANY BRETHREN .....

It takes the Spirit CAUSING you to put verses TOGETHER to come to TRUTH.

    Isaiah 28:9-11

We are never to worship angels. They are the servants of the Lord

Lucifer (now named Satan). He coveted Gods throne and the worship from the angels of heaven. Michael, the archangel threw Satan to earth as God ordered. There are scriptures to prove this. Just learn to use the search engine on this website. Search the names.

Gabriel is Gods messenger archangel. He had conversations with Virgin Mary, Daniel, and the one you found. He stands before Gods throne ready to convey Gods messages.

Ephesians 6, speaks of principalities and powers, that are Satan's servants. It's their work to persecute Gods children by preventing them to receive the salvation of Jesus.

In the book of Revelation, there will be a final battle for earth and to finally have Satan and his servants locked up.

This is why we preach and teach on this website. To answer questions and to get people ready to go with Jesus. Matthew 24 and Luke 21, tells us that time is very short now.

By giving his life for us 'humans' on the Cross, Jesus secured our freedom from sin and Death. He wants us to live with Him forever. Everyone has to make a choice. Book of Romans. John the beloved wrote the book of Revelation, while incarcerated on the island of Patmos. He saw what was to happen, in visions from God. Daniel saw them also. The end was spoken of in

2 Peter 3. Not water as with Noah; but with fire.

That's why there is an urgency to preach and get those who desire to follow God, ready to go.

The Book of John 3, will help you be born again.

We will be changed one day into eternal bodies like Jesus. God is going to renew the earth to His original intent. Beautiful without pollution, scars man made on it; animals restored that were made extinct by humans. We will wait in heaven when that occurs.

I hope this helps you to choose to follow Jesus.

Pray in your own words. Your name will be in the Book of Life ( Revelation 22).
