Hi Jackie Since God is Spirit scripturally his attributes are made made known by figures of speech, this figure is in human characteristics [known as condescension] where God is communicating at mans level. When he used sat in the contexted it was completed, the same was used when Jesus Christ sat at Gods right hand, also on the day of pentecost the spirit sat on each of the apostles it was a completed work. This is just one example of figures of speech, others are the face of God or the Hand of God or as Jesus Christ said by the finger of God. There are over 400 different figures of speech used in the scripture. Tremendous area for research and understanding.
You're quite correct Jackie, God is not man that He should grow physically weary & in need of rest. The word that is used for 'rest in Exodus 20:11 has a number of uses. It certainly implies rest because of tiredness, but also speaks of 'coming into quietness & a cessation of work'.
We can see this use also in Joshua 21:44, "And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand". The children of Israel finally settled in the Promised Land & their enemies were subdued before them. As men & women, they may have been physically tired from all they experienced after leaving Egypt, but the "rest" they received from the Lord was the final peace & quietness they yearned for. So God ceased from all His creative Work, as His people ceased from their wanderings & warrings (in these two Scriptures).
Chris I have read Exodus 20:11 but it does not explain why God needed to rest on the seventh day, when he is omnipotent, wherefore Lord bless the sabbath Day and made it holy. Given it some more thought should it not of been God rested for us has an example for us to resting in him.
Hi Jackie , sorry to but in , I hope you and Chris will forgive me . God doesn't have to rest , He just chose to . Also , the true sabbath hasn't happened yet , that will be the one thousand year reign of Christ on earth , when we will keep that sabbath by not doing our own works but by serving God .
Hello Jackie Our rest is in our peace and believing that through Him Jesus Christ all needs are met and our final resting place or so to speak our promise land is going to be our Home In heaven in our new bodies. Hebrews 4:1-11
We can see this use also in Joshua 21:44, "And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand".
