Mathew 3:12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. What is this? Has it happened yet or something in the future?

    Traynor,

Matthew 3:12 should be taken together with Matthew 3:11. John says, "I indeed baptize you with water but there is one coming after me who baptizes with the Holy Spirit, or Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit and fire."

So the question comes up about what is the fire?

If you stop there at verse 11, you can go in many different directions with all the theories out there, but if you just read one more verse ( Matthew 3:12), it answers it for us.

It says "Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

He, Christ, is going to baptize His people with the Holy Spirit. That is the Lord's ministry. He baptizes people with the Holy Spirit.

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 12:10 that we have been all baptized by one Spirit and all made to drink of the one Spirit, and we have been baptized into the body of Christ.

When the Lord ministers His Spirit, when He gives His Spirit to people, that is called "the baptism of the Holy Spirit."

So fire is judgment! He is going to baptize people with fire in the judgment. But He is going to baptize His people with the Holy Spirit. That is His ministry.

The threshing floor in Luke 3:17 is used as an example. What they would do is they would gather the crops in and they would grind it on the threshing floor, and the grain would separate from the chaff, and then they would take a shovel, a winnowing fork, a winnowing fan, and they throw it up in the air. And the grain would only travel a certain distance but the chaff would blow even further away.

By the time you got through with this process you got two piles. One goes into the barn, and the other one you burn. He is saying that's the way it is. With Jesus, either you are going to get baptized with His spirit, because that's His ministry. He will baptize you either with the Holy Spirit, or the fire of judgment.

Brother Jesse, the chaff is part of the wheat and without the chaff encompassing the wheat seed and housing it, the seed will never reach maturity. Once mature the chaff is no longer necessary and actually and unwanted by product of the seed and must be separated. Our flesh and blood body is the chaff that encompasses the SEED (Christ in us), when the SEED is mature, the chaff (our flesh and blood body that housed the immature seed) must be separated and the SEED gather into the barn.

    God Bless You

Thank you for taking time to answer. I have another question. Does this have anything to do with 1st Chronicles 3:1?

Sometimes I read some commentaries to see what the consensus is. It doesn't hurt.

There is a commentary box below the search box.

I think that the passage is speaking of God, who is the Lord of the harvest, holding the fan, etc. when He judges the mankind.
