This was the top of the list for God's commandments on how we treat others (the first ones being how we treat Him).
There is probably lots of information on this if you google the question, I recommend trying that.
From what I can remember from my instruction on the commandments, this one means to respect and obey your parents as a child and youth. As an adult it means to respect and not neglect your parents. You are to be careful to have the best relationship you can with them as long as they live. It means to take care of them and their needs when they cannot. It means to be hospitable to them when they visit you or need to stay with you. When it says that their days may be long in the land that God gives them, I believe it is specifically talking about the Israelites entering the promised land, either the days of the parents or the days of the days of the one the command is given to.
In today's times, this phrase can mean that there is a blessing to parents and our selves when we obey this command.
being if your children that know you love them when raised correctly aren't listening or obeying you that they can
physically see and hear and respect how will they be able to listen what they can't physically see or most times hear.
Therefore first part obey respect Parents in the Lord. Prayerfully this Helps.
