Bible Discussion Thread

    Hello all,

I was just thinking about how much the Bible has influenced society and culture. Many phrases from movies, songs, people, places, and expressions originate from the Bible. So, I thought I'd list the ones I know of.

"Writing on the wall" from Daniel 5:5. I've heard this in many song lyrics, like Sam Smith, Ted Nugent

Lick (or bite) the dust?, Psalms 72:9. Queen?

These phrases I've heard various places in songs and TV, but can't think of where currently:

Skin of my teeth, Job 19:20.

Love of money is root of evil. 1 Timothy 6:10

Pride before a fall? Proverbs 16:18

A time for... Ecclesiastes 3. The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn!

    Can anyone think of more?

    Here's a few more:

"Out of the mouths of babes "

    He thinks he

"Walks on water" for someone who is puffed up.

    "Fight the good fight"

Just remembered another phrase heard a lot: Eye for an eye, Exodus 21:24

    I'm thinking

    "My right hand man"

"Love your neighbor as yourself "

    "Do not muzzle the ox"

"Let your yes he yes and your no he no"

Hi Adam. That's an interesting research. I had to cheat, forgive me, but found the following to add to your list:

    U2's song "40" (based on Psalm 40:1-3)

Johnny Cash's "He turned water into wine" ( John 2:1-11)

Carole King, "Where you lead" ( Ruth 1:16)

Kelly Clarkson, "Be Still" ( Psalm 46:10)

Queen, "The prophet's song" (based on the Genesis Flood account)

Elvis Presley, "His Hand in mine" (inspired from Psalm 23)

Rolling Stones, "Prodigal Son" ( Luke 15:11-32)

The Killers & Elton John, "Joseph, better you than me" (based on Joseph, Jesus' 'guardian')

That's great, Chris- I didn't know those, like U2 or Rolling Stones.

Those bands I assume are secular and its interesting is that the world takes inspiration from God's Word, perhaps unwittingly sometimes.

We have a world full of atheists who don't hesitate to say 'God bless you' if someone sneezes, which is ironic. Of course many also used God's name in vain in a variety of ways.

Those bands (U2 & Rolling Stones) are Irish & British respectively & are secular. Just thought of, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", loosely taken from Matthew 7:12; and "its more blessed to give than receive", from Acts 20:35 (& mostly used by the world to save embarrassment when the receiving party had nothing to give in return).

Then there is: Am I my brother's keeper?; Apple of his father's eye; Scapegoat; Spare the rod, spoil the child; baptism of fire; salt of the Earth; sign of the times; wash my hands of the matter; good Samaritan; twinkling of an eye; fall from Grace; reap what you sow; four corners of the Earth.

Also, it may be that many of these individuals in these bands (since they are all quite aged now), had some Christian input in their younger days. So when thinking of a theme or lyrics to a new song, they might just appeal to the Bible for 'inspiration'! Also tells us, the great value of Scripture classes to those of us privileged enough to have had that as a school subject; nowadays, most don't even know who Noah or Moses are - tragedy!!

    Hello,

"the quick & the dead" quoted in Movie Tombstone, Wyatt Earp. That gave me chills. Read it like yesterday again in 2 Timothy 4:1, still don't fully know what that means.

Hey btw. You'll be happy to know there's a recent documentary about Billy Grahm & Johnny Cash, he was a Christian & his biggest regret was that he didn't make more songs about Christ. Possibly his last song/video that was a reflection of that.

U2 main singer has been called a Christian in the past.

A band named Avenged Seven Fold,

Song that says "there is no rest for the wicked"

I noticed the most about scriptural sayings being all throughout society, when I first started reading scripture. It was really surprising to me.

Thanks for that added information, T. Levi's. With Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, etc., they could really use their platform, popularity, & faith to bring forth clear biblical messages. God can use all of us to give witness of Himself in more ways than we can know.
