I think that Joseph died before Jesus' ministry, and Jesus, being the eldest must have been responsible for His mother's care. Most likely His brothers, James, Judah, Simeon, and Joses, cared for Mary within their families. But it also seems that Mary followed Jesus in His ministry. So, she most likely was close to the Jesus commits the care of His mother into the hands of John, most likely because Jesus' brothers were not believers at this time. But there may be other reasons for this command of our Lord to John.
