    Psalm 23:5

If you look at 1Samuel 16:1-13,

Notice they didn't invite David to the special dinner, yet : 1Samuel 16:11, "And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, there yet remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down til he come hither"

& 1Samuel 16:13 "Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward." ._..

This was lived by David the writer of the Psalm, Psalms 23:1,

    Additionally, please see 1Samuel 17:13-15, 1Samuel 17:17-58, 1Samuel 17:28-29, Matthew 10:36,

This verse describes through symbolism God's goodness to David, and by extension all believers. The Lord blesses His people (preparest a table - lays out a banquet) in a public way that proves God's favour in front of their enemies. Olive oil in Biblical Israel was used to anoint kings ( 1 Samuel 10:1) and induct priests into office, it was performed physically by pouring the oil over the person's head. To be anointed is to receive honour, which is what David enjoys from the Lord. And the last part about the overflowing cup is a picture of the abundance of blessings God pours out on His people (good things in excess of what they need).
