I'm saved but my wife of 40 years is not, she loves to make me feel like a 2 yr. old, her favorite saying, loves too belittle me and it gets under my nerves, I need Jesus to help me hold my tongue when she hits me on all cylinders!
As I read your request, Scott, something the Lord taught me YEARS ago came to my mind. I struggled at the time with the sin of 'self-defense'; I was often quick with a snide remark at someone who treated me as your wife does you, or, I was equally quick with 'the look' that revealed my attitude! One day, the Lord spoke straightly and strictly in my heart, "You can either keep defending yourself, or, you can let me be your defense." I was smitten by conviction! I prayed that He would help me to release myself entirely to His care, and not be my own defender and justifier.
Shortly after this 'lesson' - I encountered someone who was verbally mean and rude to me; to be honest, my flesh WANTED to react; but instead, I turned away and prayed, and left that person with NO reply. Wouldn't you know? After a while, THAT person came to me and apologized!
Though each person I've turned from, and with whom I have chosen to not react to has not come to apologize, I have kept myself in God's peace; and have left them confounded. Jesus said, "LET NOT your heart be troubled..." We can rule our spirits, by God's grace and Spirit, and not LET ourselves be dragged down to our adversary's level!
I trust God will help you Scott - for I can see by your prayer request, you WANT to do the right thing! And surely, our God is on the side of rightness! :) And after all -- it is a GREAT HONOR that God puts upon us, when He helps us to be like Jesus, Who was as silent before his adversaries!!! Blessings in Jesus!
Dear Scott Shafer, Keep close to God via prayer and Bible reading and devotions, confessing sins, heeding the Holy Spirit's guiding, take this matter to God in prayer and trust him to tame your tongue. Proverbs 15:1 - A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
