    Genesis 6

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. ...

Some people assume the sons of God in this passage refer to angels. I don't. The term "sons of God" is clearly used in the Bible to refer to angels as well as to human believers. I do not believe the passage in Gen 6 refers to godly angels having sex with human women resulting in wicked angel/human offspring. I believe a better interpretation would be that believing men had sex with unbelieving women and their offspring ended up becoming unbelievers of renown.

If not, I find it problematic to say the offspring of angels were born with the sin of Adam, knowing that sin is not passed through the mother but through the father, to the offspring, else Jesus would have inherited Adam's sin from his mother.

    Hosea 1:10

Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

    John 1:12

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

    Hey Mark,

The times of Noah were horrendous as in Genesis 6:11. As you said sons of God are used 5 times in OT Genesis 6 Job 1 Job 2 and Job 38 all referring to angels. It is used 6 times in the NT John 1 Romans 8 Philippians 2 and 1 John 3, my understanding is referring to those who have accepted and have faith in Jesus.

There are many opinions on fallen angels, devils/demons. There are evil beings on this earth today, we see in Daniel battles that may be going on that we are not aware of, Daniel 10. There is a set of angels that were different and for what they did, God locked them in chains of darkness until the judgment 2 Peter 2:4 Jude 1:6, and others can still roam the earth.

In verses 6:4 daughters of men having children, they became mighty men of old. The Hebrew word for old is m-'-w-lm, meaning defined as long duration, antiquity, futurity, for ever, ever, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, old, ancient, or world. It was translated everlasting 110 times, forever 136 times.

Giants we see before and after the flood as said in Genesis 6:4 "and also after that". The word giant is Nephilim and also the Rephaim (or Rephaites, the terrible ones), You can find them throughout the OT and their descriptions are not just a tall big man, Numbers 13:33 Amos 2:9 and more.

When God created everything the seed is after his kind, a dog will have a dog, a bear will have a bear, and so on, a man and woman may have a tall big man but it will not be a giant. Angels can on earth have a body that can eat, and drink, Genesis 18, fiscally wrestle Genesis 32 and we are told how we should entertain strangers because they may be an angel, Hebrews 13.

Just a few things you may look at. If an angel left his first estate and came down to earth could he mate? Was that why God locked them in darkness and other bad angels and Satan can still roam the earth? After the flood, there were only 8 where did these giants come from?

    Interesting subject,

    God bless,

    Reply to Ronald Whittemore.

I don't believe angels can have sex with humans and produce offspring, but if they did their offspring would not have been human sinners who inherited their sin from Adam.

    Hey Marke,

That's fine, the angels being the sons of God and mating with women is a subject that has no bearing on our salvation. May the Holy Spirit lead us and guide us in the discussions that we do in humility and love toward each other so that we all may grow.

Your other point on sin being passed down from the man is a different discussion that if you post it others may have some helpful replies. I know Adam was not deceived 1 Timothy 2:14 and in Adam, all die 1 Corinthians 15:22.

Eve also ate of the tree, she was not born of man, was she not under the same curse? Was it a curse on mankind as a whole without having it passed down to them from dad or mom? Is the sin nature a sin? Jesus had to have the ability to sin to fulfill the covenant, Hebrews 4:15. Just a couple of questions may others give you answers.

    God bless,

    Reply to Ronald Whittemore.

I see no reason to avoid Biblical subjects that are not specifically dealing with the issue of salvation. I also see no reason to assume the offspring of the daughters of men in Gen 6 were only half human and did not inherit sin from Adam.

I agree that the sons of God are those that were following God were enticed by the looks of carnal women.

This is an interesting thread, and a topic much discussed in Christendom today!

I agree with you, Marke. I don't believe the 'sons of God' are angels. Not one of the old time preachers/commentators I've read believed so either.

I believe the godly line of Seth began to degenerate and instead of taking godly women to themselves for the sake of maintaining a holy race, they looked upon the fair daughters of men and began to mix, believers and unbelievers....much like today's ecumenism.

Once there was no holy race left that was totally devoted to the One true God...destruction ensued!

The sad thing about history is that we don't learn from history, Marke! What has been is again...and the crazy thing is, people do the same things as those 'back then' did who apostasized, and are deluded into thinking they will come out of it all without ending up with the same tragic results as they did in the past! Lord, help us!

    Blessings!
