Jesus said in John 17 sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth.
Also here are words that define Bible salvation.
I. JUSTIFICATION- the declaration that a man is righteous when he is not.
II. REDEMPTION - the payment made to buy the sinner back from the wrath of God
III. PROPITIATION - the price paid to satisfy the demands of an angry God against sin. The difference between redemption and propitiation is that in redemption the payment is made, in propitiation the payment is accepted by God and a appeases, or placates, His anger. He is completely satisfied with the payment He received.
IV. REMISSION- the payment for sin is applied to your account, and you are forgiven the debt that you owed.
V. EXPIATION - the act of purging or cleansing of sin. Sin is taken away, not merely forgiven, based upon the actions of Christ on our behalf.
VI. IMPUTATION- the act of God whereby He charges the sinner's sins to Jesus Christ, and whereby He charges the righteousness of Jesus Christ to the sinner.
VII. REGENERATION - the act of salvation in which the Holy Spirit enters the sinner and gives him a new life by a new birth. A new spirit, able to respond to the Holy Spirit, is created within the sinner.
VIII. RECONCILIATION _ the act whereby two warring parties ( you and God) are brought together in peace.
IX. SPIRITUAL CIRCUMCISION - the act of the Holy Spirit that divides the new nature in the Christian from his body of sinful flesh, so that no sin done in the flesh can affect the new spirit.
X. ADOPTION - the act whereby God takes a sinner and puts him into the family of God upon salvation.
Xi. SANCTIFICATION - the act whereby God sets a saved sinner apart, so that, from then on, he is dealt with as a son instead of a stranger.
XII. GLORIFICATION - the ultimate end of a saved sinner whereby he is made completely like Jesus Christ and given an inheritance with Him in His kingdom.
Thank you for your generous explanation for Sanctification. I am a missionary working with a Peace Mission to China, teaching: English Communication Skills and providing Cross-cultural Counseling and some family counseling. My students are University Professors, their families and friends who are all in China. We work on WeChat and on the computer/internet.
I began my work 33 + years ago. In the early 90s I founded HIS Mission, (Helping International Students/Scholars). A couple of weeks ago one student asked me about Sanctification. Of course, English is not their first language. That is what inspired me to ask my question. And, of course, The King James Bible is what I prefer and try to teach them to use.
Since Christianity is against the law in China, I do have to be very careful - for their sake and for my own ability to continue my work with them. You have been very helpful with your time and attention and I appreciation the additional references you offered. All that you have provided will enable me to check out additional information in order to carry out my work of ministry and God's Mission.
Hello Donya. I wasn't sure to what level you wanted to go to for an explanation, hence my brief reply. I suppose your dialogue with that enquiring student has now long ended, but if you're still interested in more material on Sanctification, I would add the following:
As mentioned, 'sanctify' means 'to set apart'; having the same root as 'saint and holy'. For the believer, sanctification is generally seen in three aspects.
a. Positional Sanctification. The believer been set apart by his position in God's family. This is so of every true believer regardless of his spiritual condition because this concerns his spiritual state not his present condition (remember 1 Corinthians 6:11 was read by largely carnal Christians). This sanctification is based on Christ's Death as seen in Hebrews 10:10.
b. Experiential Sanctification. Since we have been set apart, we are to be increasingly set apart from the flesh & world in our daily experience ( 1 Peter 1:14-16). So when 'spiritual growth' is spoken about & expected in believers, it is this progressive & experiential aspect of the sanctifying work that should be our continual aspiration.
c. Future Sanctification. Also referred to as 'completed redemption'. We believe that the redemption we now have in Christ is complete in its work before God & in our lives (in the matter of release of sin's penalty & grip). Likewise, our future redemption or sanctification implies that their full meaning can only be grasped when our 'position & practise' comes into full & perfect accord when we see Jesus, raised to be with Him, & become as He is ( 1 John 3:1-3; Ephesians 5:26,27; Jude 1:24,25): This is our Redemption/Sanctification completed. Hope this 'extra' will assist you for the future.
It was heartening to read something of your work. Having done some ministry in Pakistan, I can well appreciate the vigilance & discretion required when sharing with folk. May much fruit be borne as the Spirit leads you all.
Hi Donya. As a verb, 'to sanctify' means 'to set apart'. We can see its use in Scriptures such as, Joshua 7:13 or 1 Peter 3:15. As a noun, 'sanctification' can also mean 'made holy by being set apart'; as seen in 1 Corinthians 1:30 or 1 Thessalonians 4:3,4. Even the thought of holding somone in reverence or respect can be seen in the word as well.
Meaning of Sanctification - In Reply - 2 years ago
Christ promised and made provision for the believer's sanctification for a purpose. Sanctification is the believer's cleansing or purging from the nature of sin. This experience is not for sinners, but for people who, through grace, are saved and reconciled to God.
