The lesson that stands out to me is asking direction from God and hearing only parts of what is said due to an indwelling lust
"And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed. 2 Peter 2:15,16 sums in up .........." Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet.
The primary theme of the first oracle is Balaam's inability to curse what God has not cursed. The primary theme of the second oracle is the trustworthiness of God's promises. For now, consider that the actions of this foreigner as a commentary on the Israelites' inclination to curse what God has not cursed (the wilderness) and their lack of trust in God.

Mukula
