Hello Abbey. Unfortunately, in English we have a limited use of the word 'love', unless we qualify it with other words. But in Greek, the language of the New Testament, John 3:16 tells us that "God so loved the world" (Gk. egapesen; from the root, 'agapao'). And this type of love (agapao) is the highest form of love one can have & demonstrate to someone else.
It is more than feeling very sorry for someone, more than providing food & various forms of help, more than a loving embrace or comforting words even when the other person despises you. It is a sacrificing love: a willingness to unconditionally give of oneself. One could see it as a parent who would sacrifice everything for their children; one entering a building fully engulfed in flames to rescue a helpless injured person; the many servants of the Lord (recorded in history) who willingly submitted to the burning stake or cannibals, so that the Gospel would reach those who've never heard of Jesus. Just a few examples here of this type of love that also clearly shows how God loved this world of sinners & those really unworthy of any help, to give of Himself (in Jesus, of and from God, made flesh) to be killed for our sakes. God's agapao sent His Son to the Cross that "whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life".
