Apart from other taxes, the Romans demanded the occupied nations (the non-Roman citizens) to pay a special tax. That was the tax Jesus and Peter were asked to pay (the story with the fish). It is also the tax that Jews asked Jesus if they are pay to Caesar. If Jesus said no, they would have called Him a rebel against the Roman rule.
