What does this mean "he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease" in Daniel 9:27
  • Ronald Whittemore - In Reply - 2 years ago
    Hey Levi,

From Daniel 9:27 "he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease". The daily sacrifices oblations/offerings by the people every day. It starts with the Tamid Exodus 29:38-42, the first, it is inspected by the priest to make sure no spots or blemishes and sacrificed at the 3rd hour at 9 AM the same time Jesus was nailed to the cross. All the sacrifices and offerings of the people were placed on top of the first lamb.

At the 9th hour 3 PM, the second lamb, the last, it was sacrificed and placed on top of all the offerings done that day that end the sacrifices and offerings for the day, the same time Jesus died. The daily sacrifice and oblation/offering have stopped several times in history, by Babylon in 586 BC, Antiochus IV in 167 BC, and the last time by Titus and Rome in 70 AD, and some say it will happen again in the future.

The Hebrew word shabath translated to cease can have meanings of; cause to, let, make to cease, celebrate, cause to fail, put away, take away, and rest. The context of the chapter is important for understanding. This verse is where the 7 years are put at the end times based on who he is in this verse. That is another discussion.

    God bless,

    What does Ephesians 6:18 mean?

There are two viewpoints here. Some in the Post-Millennium or perhaps amillenial group who discount the Tribulation think that Christ is the one who fulfilled the ending of sacrifice when he began his ministry; hence the sacrifice was null and void once the Temple was rent 3 and a half years later at the crucifixion. Whether they are "full preterists" or partial ones is determined by if they think Christ has already returned or some things have already occurred in Revelation. There is also a tendency to ascribe the first seal to Christ beginning His conquest and continuing throughout the church age; or what they consider the 1000 years to symbolize (despite the fact we are almost 2000 years from the crucifixion). To me; that is a problem because of the obvious ignoring plain facts and time frames as well as prophecies not completely fulfilled or even fulfilled at all in Revelation as well as other O.T. scriptures. It is interesting to study the things that WERE fulfilled in part in A.D. 70; no doubt some supernatural things occurred; and Christ referred to that as the generation that would see all things come to pass in part; but as with anything else there is usually a multi layered fulfillment. Antiochus Epiphanes is an example of someone much like Antichrist ending sacrifices in the days of the intertestamental period when the Maccabees were prophesied in Daniel. There is a final fulfillment as well to come.

The viewpoint more traditionally is that there will be a rebuilt Temple (near fruition today) that will for the first part of the Tribulation involve sacrifices once again; which Antichrist will end to bring worship to himself with the image of the Beast. Ultimately; if we take the 1000 years seriously we see literal sacrifices once again during the Millennium period as Ezekiel 48 and many other passages indicate.

It would be for a memorial and ceremonial cleansing of mortal men in the physical presence of God and Resurrected saints.
