Thanks for beginning this series. My one comment on this post is that the text in Genesis 15 says that both a smoking oven (fire pot) and a burning torch passed through the carcasses.
I think that these two things represent the Father (consuming fire) and the Son (light of the world) together making the covenant and agreeing together concerning what is promised and prophesied. In Heb. 6:13 it is said that God swore by Himself in this covenant for Abraham.
"God swore by Himself" meaning that both the Father and the Son are divine Persons who can enter such an agreement, but also the One True Godhead.
The smoking firepot and flaming torch represents Gods presence in the same way the burning bush revealed God's presence to Moses in Exodus. The pillar cloud and pillar of fire revealed God's presence to the children of Israel in the Exodus experience and in the cloud on the summit of Mt. Sinai. That was a manifestation of the Glory.
