1 Cor 14, about speaking in tongues..yet especially 2 & 9-14. Confuses me & I was told if we dont speak in tongues we are not truly save or going to heaven. * John 3 says 'if we believe in Him, will not perish but have everlasting life. Which is what I believe. Tho been doughting myself latly so if anyone can help, I'd be greatful. I also read tongues is a just speaking in Spanish or Latin not English, For those that dont speak in other tongues. So is that it & speaking in tongues just jibberish, or is it real?

Way back when (probably 1986) I started seeking the "Pentecostal experience" As I read scripture, it is a separate and distinct experience over and above the indwelling we receive when we get saved. I could go through and give you all kinds of scripture references about it, but to me that's all dry and stuffy and would make me sound like a theolgian/pastor and all biblical and stuff - let's get real here - I received the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. When I began speaking in that beautiful, unknown language, my eyed popped open and all I could do was stare down at my mouth and watch. Yes, I was doing the speaking as the Spirit gave me the "words" to say. Ain't no way you can tell me tongues ain't real!!!! The Devil isn't going to give you something that will make you love Jesus more, make you want to devour God's Word and give you power to take His Word to others.

Don't be scared to seek to receive more of Him.

Yes Mr. Davis, the devil Will give you things that will make you think you love Jesus & want to spread Gods word incorrectly. For he knows if he puffs you up, like a prosperity teacher, you'll be hot on fire for teaching as they do, UNbiblical.

His spirit in us gives us peace that passes all understanding so we are not asshamed to seek to receive more of Him or sharing His true word.! So Never be scared to share scripture in fear of sounding smart. We are to guide ppl to trust in His word not our understanding.

With brotherly live..Ok, lets get real-I exsperienced standing in a garage & I'm still not a car.! Even if ppl understand our ways, they may choose to believe otherwise. Freewill is a gift we all share. Cuz w/out Gods prospective hand, evil creeps in & we grow up the wrong vine & begin twisting His words causing one to stumble.

If I were ever to cause someone to stray from Christ, I would pray to be more humbling so I don't open my mouth w/out my heart & I'd think twice so as not to loose my way missing the narrow road. Like, I recently learned I have the gift of prophetic dreams tho some think its of satan so I only share when a life is in danger. Not even then if Im not sure who it was to be shared with so as not to boast. For everyone sees Him w/Their own heart. The heart He gave us that grows in His time & for His purpose. Not relying on our own understanding cuz yur own flesh can & will deceive you.!

When God allows you the ability to listen w/your heart you'll know what I mean. Till then, all the tongues in the world fall on deaf ears. We are merely to love God w/all our being & love and pray for others especially our enemy. Yet facts are facts & those are what to concern oneself with. Christ DBR should be our main focus so when He IS truly w/us, (not just a dream or exsperience making us proud yet Him making is wise), we'll know then how to truly guide others. God bless 'Texsis'.

Maybe tongues ceased existing in the church? Joel's prophesy that was recalled by Peter on Pentecost covers a time period from that time all the way to "19And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:20The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:" So it seems that they will keep existing to the very end.

Was it for the Jews? No, the epistle to the church of Corinth was for the gentiles.

What about 1 Cor 13:8? Let's read the whole passage from 8 to 13, "8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity." So it is clear that tongues will stop existing when "the perfect comes", that is when we enter Heaven.

Is it a matter of salvation? No it is not, as GiGi put it right "As for being saved, this is not based on speaking in tongues, but on faith in Jesus. Any and all who place their faith and trust in Him to save us are saved by his grace freely bestowed upon us."

So what "do I do now?" Do you want my advice? When kneeling down to pray why don't you keep asking God for His Spirit and the sign of it, speaking in tongues? In science they say that a theory can not be a Law unless it is proved experimentally. GBU

    Hello Texsis 1/2

Let's put some things in order about tongues.

What are tongues? They are unknown languages spoken by a believer.

Do they understand what they say? No, they don't unless they have a revelation from God. 1 Cor 14:13. "Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.".

Is it necessary to speak in tongues? Yes it is. Why? 1 Cor 14:4, "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.".

What does apostle Paul say about us speaking in tongues? 1 Cor 14:5, "I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying." Paul also speaks about prophesying.

Was Paul speaking in tongues? Yes, he did, 1 Cor 14:18, "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:".

So what is this thing speaking in tongues? On Pentecost the sign that the apostles received the Spirit was speaking in tongues. Similarly in the Cornelious' incident. Similarly in the incident with Paul and the disciples in Ephesus. So it a sign that a believer has received the Spirit of God. But it is also a spiritual gift, 1 Cor 12:10, "To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:" From that verse it also shown as before that a believer does not understand what they say unless the have the gift of interpreting. The specific gift is "kinds of tongues", that is many different tongues.

Maybe as many say, love is enough (ch. 13) so those tongues are not needed anymore? 1 Cor 14:1, "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy."

So appreciated. So if I understood correctly, speaking in tongues (if not translated) only edifies one self. Yet if someone hears & interprets, it edifies the church because it is of God. Qs: Isn't edifing one self like boasting, for we are not to boast? & it is Not nessesary to speak in tongues to get to heaven (which was my other Qs) because "our believing in Jesus DBR & that HE is the Only way, the Only truth & the Only life that that gets us there", correct? I always believed the last "last part" yet when I was asked if I was sure I was going to heaven, cuz I have never spoke in tongues, I thought I'd ask. Now it make sense. Thnx, God bless 'Texsis'

    Hello Texsis,

We are asked to seek the kingdom of God first and His righteousness that comes from faith in Jesus. This is our priority as believers. We can know that the Lord will certainly lead us in our daily walk.

As for being saved, this is not based on speaking in tongues, but on faith in Jesus. Any and all who place their faith and trust in Him to save us are saved by his grace freely bestowed upon us.

As to speaking in tongues. Paul did say that they will cease ( 1 Cor. 13:8). This does not mean that tongues have necessarily ceased in this day, but perhaps so. We do not know the mind of God in this matter. he can do whatever He wills and bestow whatever gift He deems good and appropriate to any believer. But the Scripture do not declare that a person must speak in tongues to be truly saved. That doctrine is an addition to Scripture and should be discarded.

The important thing is that you have the true sign of conversion, the Holy Spirit dwelling in you Who helps you to believe and grow in faith and knowledge of God, our Father, and Jesus Christ, His Son.

Texsis, I will pray for you today.

Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble and needy hearts asking for you to strengthen our faith in You, in Jesus, and in the Holy Spirit. We know that You all work together for good to to those who love You and who are called by You to believe and be saved. Refresh Texsis today in her heart, soul, mind, and body. Strengthen her faith today and bring her deep assurance of her present salvation and Your power to sustain her in faith forever. I ask You today to give Texsis discernment in these matters of b=salvation and speaking in tongues so that she will understand properly. We thank you for all the gifts You bestow upon believers for the edification of the body of Christ and teach each believer how to exercise the gift the Spirit has given to them. How gracious You are, Lord God. You have given us so much already, but we ask that You continue to bless us

    Well Texsis,

It sound like you are in the midst of a change in your life and need direction from the Lord in choosing the best thing. I can pray for you again right now.

Dear Heavenly Father, we always come to You in prayer int he name of Jesus, because He told us to do so and said You will answer! Texsis and I are asking that You guide her in this possible move. Raise up her spirits to be feeling more gladdened on heart. It probably best for us to not make important decisions when we are feeling down, so Texsis does need you to work in her right now to be uplifted and sober minded concerning this possibility. We know that You are with us always wherever we may be living or wherever we go. So, asking that You give Texsis clear direction here. She is concerned about the temptation to return to her former life she lived while in Utah. Keep her from ever going back to that way of living, Father. Strengthen her to repel all temptations towards falling into a sin-filled lifestyle. Sanctify her today and empower her to resist whet ever tempted her before. We know how much You love us and desire for us to be holy and godly in our life. So, guide Texsis to the situation that will be most helpful to her to live this way for You. Amen.

I should have specified, if I stay hear w/the way I'm being treated & seems Im not to think for myself (by son) plus get disrespected daily (by grandson). Can't even (biblically)! spank anymore & his dad don't correct him. Tho I'm truly thankful he isn't a satanist anymore, he needs much prayer cuz refuses to listen to me on Gods word, thinking reading the bible once, he knows all now.

Utah was great.! Ppl aren't as nice & polite as ppl in Texas but it's tolerable if they don't know yur from the 'other side' of the white gate.! I worked for the County & the City plus, already have confirmation to return once Im in town. An extra plus is, I won't get a single Mosquitos bite. I don't drink so I am sober minded just need to wait on Gods confirmation & definitly leave on a good note not in haste.

I so appreciate you GiGi, truly & the prayer was beautiful. Its after 6a, I need a few hrs sleep. Blessing coming yur way. Ooops, almost signed w/my real name..lol.. gnyt...good morning. :)

    Texsis,

Oh, thanks for the info..I was not implying that you drink alcohol. I was meaning that sometimes our minds get clouded with the circumstances of the present that we need to have it cleared up to make a reasonable and thoghtful (soberminded) decision.

I will continue to pray for you. I appreciate the new info you have given me. Thanks. I know better how to pray for you. Hope you have a good day.

Wait a minute..I resemble those remarks.! Lol.. I don't know what it is about your prayers for me but you always bring a few glistening tears to my eyes.! Thank you GiGi, as always you are a blessing & my sister in Christ. I always need direction tho I'm not a ppl pleaser anymore, finding myself was hard. Thank God I had a roof over my head when I spent the last 18 yrs being a single mom.

I feel closer to you & ppl on here then most of my own family. Tho my fault for slidding back & my attitude on life. But No more. I will NEVER turn me from Jesus again. Nor will I take a V muchless the mark of the beast, God forbid I'm left behind come rapture.

Till then I will only do what Gods wants of me in all I do (including moving) till He says 'Run' Then (if its not West) it will be straight to the front of gavels line, come time.! With a huge smile on my face :) My kids think I'm crazy cuz I'm not scared of anyone/thing. I pray for the day they too have Gods peace that passes understanding even tho Im still learning His word. Not a perfect soul on earth yet He loves us all. Merely waiting for unbelivers to believe & receive Him.!

How truly awesome is He?? Took me yrs to realize "All I had to do was 'let go & let God" because not paying attention to the footprints on my path, it took me longer.! All is in His time for His glory.! Thnx for the ear GiGi & being a friend.! God bless 'Texsis'.

I'm going to politely assume you grew up Pentecostal and that's when you were told that speaking in tongues was proof of salvation. That just isn't true and I'll show you why.

1 Corinthians 14:26-28 is just saying if you are speaking in a tongue/another language you need an interpreter. Tongues were known languages. You see, tongues is used to say that they are speaking in a language they weren't taught. Proof of this is in Genesis 10:5 where the world was split because of the building of the tower of Babel, and God gave them each a different language or tongue.

Now the New Testament understanding of tongues is that you are filled with the spirit and in turn you can speak in tongues of other languages. That was completely reserved for the first century church and here is why:

    1. It was clearly not a sign of salvation ( 1 Corinthians 14:22)

    a. It was for the Jews ( 1 Corinthians 14:21) "This people" is God talking about Jews.

    2. It was done away with ( 1 Corinthians 13:8-10)

    a. "Tongues shall cease": the meaning of "that which is perfect" means the completion of scripture. So when Revelation was finished by the apostle John, tongues ceased.

    3. Proof of salvation is by our works and not by signs ( James 2:14-19)

    4. Tongues was never received after baptism, but after receiving the Holy Spirit ( Acts 10:44-48, Acts 19:6)

    a. After receiving the Holy Ghost they would speak in tongues, it was not when they were baptized.

    5. Tongues are not necessary ( 1 Corinthians 14:19)

As clearly seen, tongues were merely a sign for the Jews that was used by Spirit filled Christians which was done away with after scripture was completed; not proof of salvation. Salvation is completely through Christ and Christ alone. Romans 5:8, 6:23, 10:9, 10:23, and John 14:6. You don't need tongues to tell you that you are saved, you need the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

If you would like more elaboration, just respond back to this with your questions.

No, Im good. Wasn't raised Penticostal but a friend insisted I wasn't truly saved unless I spoke in tongues & was baptised. Being a believer all my life yet only by hearing pastors speak cuz didn't start reading & studying for myself till I found this app & not being electronically savvy till last few yrs. So basically what I've always believed is true & like I responded to Gianna (spelling of name may be off), a bit ago, pretty much somes up everything you just mentioned. What a sigh of relief this is. Thank you so very much. Thank the Lord I have smart biblically educated ppl to help. Now, I'm going to reach out to my Penicostal friends (may even copy & paste your words cuz I learned to do that recently..lol), for I'm wanting to help as many ppl as possible know the true Jesus before my times up. I truly enjoy it & the more I learn the more excited I am about, some day, going on a mission. No, Im not Lds either. Do you have a sermon app to listen to on Sundays? I listen to Voddie now tho I'm rightly divide, he is great.! God bless 'Texsis'

I would encourage you to watch good live streams on YouTube or Facebook from Harvest Baptist Church or Sheridan Road Baptist Church. They both preach the Word of God in truth. You can find them on both platforms. Harvest Baptist Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa and Sheridan Road Baptist Church in Saginaw, Michigan.

Will do thanks Pastor Ray, appreciate it very much. If you ever read something I say on here & its wrong biblically, will you please take a min to correct me? Like a verse then can look it up. I pray before responding & believe He is guiding me in my words. Yet, not meaning to upset anyone, I have a rambling problem when I get to going, so at times my words tend to stray off what He may have really wanted me to say.
  • Texsis - In Reply - 1 year ago
Just finished responding to GiGi when I noticed your responce & have to get grandson fed. Will definitly look up & read all you sent. Tho one quick Qs: so what meaning of 1Cor, 14:2? If you already answered this, I will catch it later or tomorrow. Thanks so much & God bless 'Texsis'

    1 Corinthians 14

In this chapter the apostle directs them about the use of their spiritual gifts, preferring those that are best and fitted to do the greatest good. I. He begins with advising them of all spiritual gifts to prefer prophesying, and shows that this is much better than speaking with tongues, ver 1-5. II. He goes on to show them how unprofitable the speaking of foreign languages is, and useless to the church; it is like piping in one tone, like sounding a trumpet without any certain note, like talking gibberish; whereas gifts should be used for the good of the church, ver 6-14. III. He advises that worship should be celebrated so that the most ignorant might understand, and join in prayer and praise, and presses the advice by his own example, ver 15-20. IV. He informs them that tongues were a sign for unbelievers rather than those that believe; and represents the advantage of prophecy above speaking with tongues, from the different suggestions they would give to the mind of an unbeliever coming into their assemblies, ver 21-25.
