What does it mean when Eve became the "mother of all living" ( Genesis 3:20)?
  • Chris - In Reply - 1 year ago
It is still better understood that if a Mother is mentioned, then she must be the first in line to her children & their children. It cannot work backwards, i.e. if there were humans before Eve & then she was called 'Mother' to those before her. Even, the Apostle Paul (in 1 Corinthians 15:45) stated, "...The FIRST MAN Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit." If the "first man" was not really the first man then anything we feel about it or believe is correct, will only be from speculation, or from science (as you wrote).

If there were people after the last Adam, why couldn't there have been people before the first?
  • Chris - In Reply - 1 year ago
Strobe. There were no people after the "last Adam" (which of course refers to Jesus). Jesus never had a wife or fathered any children of the flesh; however, He did make the Way open & accessible through His Blood, that we might become God's children ( Galatians 3:26; Ephesians 1:4-6; Hebrews 2:10-13). But the first Adam never brought forth Spirit-filled children (since he succumbed to temptation & sin), but he certainly produced many physical children, with unfortunately with the same fallen nature as he. It does take great faith to believe this, as it does take faith to believe that Adam & Eve were the very first human creation of God. But if there were people before Adam, then the Word does not show it, so one again needs great faith to believe the propositions from science, understanding man's very limited knowledge of such a distant past.

    Strobe:

Hebrews 4:3 For we which have BELIEVED do enter into REST (the sabbath), as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall ENTER IN TO MY (the sabbath) REST; although the WORKS were FINISHED from the foundations of the world.

Hebrews 4:2 For unto us was the GOSPEL preached, as well (as it was preached) TO THEM ......

We are just playing out what has ALREADY been written.

    God's will is BEING DONE.

We are JUST POTS being CONFORMED into the IMAGE of Christ. From the first man TIL the last man.

Revelation 22:13 "I AM " Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the FIRST and the LAST.

Romans 8:29 .... he did PREDESTINATE to be CONFORMED to the IMAGE of son.

Job 38:7 When all the morning stars SANG TOGETHER (all became ONE), the SONS of GOD (all became ONE) shouted for joy?

John 17:22 And the GLORY that thou hast GIVEN ME, I HAVE GIVEN THEM (finished from the foundations of the world), that they may be ONE, even as WE ARE ONE.

Psalms 46:10 Be still and know "I AM" God ......

Isaiah 26:3 Thou will KEEP HIM in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee .....

    God Bless YOU!

    Hi Strobe.

I would like to add a thought to what has already has been shared,, taking it from another angle.

    Romans 5:12-14 states as follows;

"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

NEVERTHELESS DEATH REIGNED FROM ADAM TO MOSES, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

Being that by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men,

Isn't it reasonable to think that if there were men and women before Adam that this plague of sin and death would have passed over them? They wouldn't have suffered death and would still be amongst us.

    WE ARE DESCENDENTS OF ADAM.

1 Corinthians 15:45-49. "And so it is written, THE FIRST MAN "Adam" was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. "Jesus".

Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.

As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.

AND AS WE HAVE BORNE THE IMAGE OF THE EARTHY, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

    God bless.

I am only going by the plain words of Genesis. AFTER THE FALL, Eve got her name because she was the mother of all living. Yes, Paul says Adam was the first MAN, (he does not say or mean there were no humans after Jesus, and presumably does not necessarily mean there were no humans before Adam.) So humanity, before Adam and Eve, were nothing more than glorified animals that God decided to make in His image. You can reject science if you want, but it is almost universally accepted that humanity has been around for hundreds of thousands of years so you'll only be ridiculed by people who know better. God started His wonderful creation 6000 years ago with Adam to elevate man(kind) into His image. None of this conflicts with a plain reading of Genesis in my view.

    Hi Strobe.

I would like to share a view with you. Not that it's true but one that I find provocative.

Eve was named or perhaps given the title "The mother of all living" after Genesis 3:15. I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and HER SEED. This is where we find the first prophecy of Christ, who's coming to redeem all of God's creation, (Lifting the curse on all of creation )

Adam calls the woman Eve/Woman of all living prophetically.

    HERE'S WHY.

Eve was to "become" the mother of all living because it was through the seed of the woman that all that was living redemption would take place. Christ.

Adam named all the animals before the woman hit the scene and the woman was called Eve after the fall and the prophecy of Christ.

    God bless.

    Hi Strobe,

If I may; Adam named the woman, his wife God made from him Eve, translated mother of all living is fulfilled after the flood. Only eight people were saved in the ark, they are Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives. All these are descendants of Adam and Eve that make all living today are from Adam and Eve making her the mother of all living.

The Bible gives us a record of the line from Adam to Jesus and there is much we have not been told. What we have been given in Scripture is God's plan, the foretelling of the coming of the Messiah Jesus, the plan of our salvation. There are many ideas, speculations, or interpretations out there. Our imaginations can create many inventive ideas about what is not covered.

We read in 1 Cor. 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. Adam was the first man and Jesus was the second man. This is about us being mortal/earthy with the curse that was put on the first Adam who sinned and our way of obtaining eternal life and victory over death that comes only through the second man, our Lord Jesus Christ, not that Adam was the first man on earth. They are also called the first Adam and the last Adam 1 Cor. 15:45.

My understanding God created the heavens where is the sun, moon, stars, planets, and our earth and all that is in it in six days, with no gaps, or any evolution involved, and when He saw everything, He had made He said it was very good, end of the sixth day and God rested on the seventh day.

Could there have been people who were created on the sixth day and Adam and Eve were after the seventh day being part of God's plan for God knows the beginning from the end? Scripture will tell you, not science.

Our studies of Genesis 1,2,3, should not cause any doubt in the word of God, everything before the flood God destroyed. All living is from Adam and Eve, one race, made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth.

    God bless,

    RLW

I don't see this at all. If there was no one else living, how could she be the mother of all living? Obviously, the world was already populated when Adam was created and, after the fall, Eve spiritually became their mother. This is not only perfectly in line with Genesis but it also lines up with what we know from science.

Hi Strobe. In Genesis 3:20, Adam named his wife 'Eve' (Hebrew, Chavvah), as this name means, "life, or living". You might remember that Adam first called her 'woman' (Ishshah, Genesis 2:23), meaning, 'woman, female' (as one coming out from man), but then he named her, Eve. We aren't told what prompted Adam to now call her Eve; probably, he saw in her the God-given capacity to reproduce & hence be the progenitor of others of their type, not being created in the way God had done for them. So this verse then strongly implies that there were no living humans before Adam & Eve, as Eve was our very first Mother & all in the world must come through her line & manner of birth (not creation).
