And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith theLord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.
9And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, TheLordis my God.
Three is a command number for the Son. Here Prophet Zechariah is referring to Jesus Christ as the refiner bringing a remnant of the nation of Israel into the body of Christ. One third refers to this aspect of Gospel- outreach which redeems Israel for everlasting salvation. "they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, TheLordis my God."
We see Jesus Christ as the Refiner first mentioned in the Book of Malachi and it is the Day of His coming. He is like a refiner's fire. (Mal.3:2). In the verse preceding we have the Spirit telescoping the role of John the Baptist and into the Son who is now whom all seek. His first advent as the Servant-King is elided over. In its place the Messiah is whom they delight in'. "And theLord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith theLordof hosts." (3:1)
Jesus Christ having conquered death is now 'suddenly come in the temple' as a refiner and purifier of silver.'This temple is in heaven.
In Re.7 we have the kern of the baptism for the dead reintroduced. The intercessory role of Seth (Ge.4:25) comes a full circle with the sealing of the 144,000 in place of 'the sons of Levi'. The reason is given in the next verse,- so that the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord 'as in the days of old, and as in former years.' (Mal.3:4)
