God laid before Adam a choice, the same He does now in an altered form. He asks Cain thus: "If thou doest well, shall thou not be accepted?(v.7)
Now when God made Adam a living soul He breathed life into him quality of which is different fromthat of an amoeb and it responds to pleasure and avoid pain. Life abundant is different. When Moses would lay before Israel he declares the only way one might choose life, - which is abundant life, the very quality that comes from wisdom which is of God. "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:"(De.30:19) When God breathed into the nostrils he did just that so that 'both thou and thy seed may live'. Moses being man of God would not add anything to what is the truth. God set the truth in Adam for the sake of Cain and Abel and for the holy family adopted in his own Son. God blessed man saying. "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it."(1:28-29)
Serpent who beguiled Eve was not speaking in his own best interest but for Satan the father of lies. Ever since it is the carnal wisdom which as James rightly says is devilish and it is what is ruling in our times.(Jas.3:15)
Adam realized his eyes were opened while his eye of faith was shut, is more likely.
How this could have affected the siblings? Cain would present fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. He would have based the sweat and toil as quality that God would appreciate, while Abel would please him by offerings 'of firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof.' Cain was pleased to base his physical labor in his choice while Abel chose what wisdom of his spirit prompted him.We read in v.5 "But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell."How did Abel settle upon a burnt offering? He relied on wisdom from heaven instead.
