2 Sa.11:1-9 Sin Lies at the door

"But David tarried still at Jerusalem (v.1)."

David tarrying in Jerusalem was in the fitness of things where a mighty man of warrior like Joab knew his business and he relied on his expertise. So the king sent him,"and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah'.

Jerusalem is a geographical name and it had nothing in itself to protect David from sinning. What defiles a man comes from his heart. This being the case Jerusalem is a name doubling for any other for instance Egypt, Sodom or Babylon (Re.11:8). On the other hand his heart remained the most vulnerable and having time out from an overload of work and in between awaiting reports from the battle front he had more chances of slipping up in his daily devotion. The heart is like a city, "Except theLordkeep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain(Ps.127:1)" and it applies to our hearts as well.

In this context this short dialogue between God and Cain shall help us understand that heart is where any meaningful association between God and man could be set up. Cain and his younger brother offered sacrifices, and God counseled of sin lying at the door.(Ge.4:3-7).

King David let himself go astray from his sensory inputs."And from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon./And David sent and enquired after the woman(vv.3-4) He let his eyes deceive him.

"From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?/Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.3Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts./ Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God(Jas,4:1-4)."
