According to 1Corinthians 14:13, speaking in tongues must be interpreted but how do you interpret something you don't understand?

Hi Karen, I'm (Jesse A) Not the other gentleman Jesse

    That also posts here.

Speaking in tounges is not a (must) to always be interpreted .

Let us look to scriptures to seek the truth and not take verses out of context.

Speaking in tounges is a spiritual gift given from god.

It is not always a known language, like in acts on the day of pentecost.

We can find the answer in Corinthians 1 ch 14. If we read the whole chapter we find the whole truth and wont cherry pick it.

    Corinthians 1 ch 14 vs2

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

This tells us it is an unknown language, a Holy language .That NO man understands. Including himself. It is the spirit in him that is speaking with God.

The Holyghost in the person speaks in a Holy language speaking directly to God. For edification of himself.

If God sees fit that speaking in tounges is for the church there will be an interpretation.

Now Speaking in tounges with no interpretation is very biblically sound as well .

We find this in the same chapter. 1 Corinthians ch14 vs 4

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

Yes by all means pray for the gift of prophecy along with all other gifts of the spirit, that God sees fit for our life and our purpose in him. That we may be obedient to Gods will .

I pray God will Bless you without measure, overflowing. With all the gifts of the spirit according to His will for your life.

    GB I love you all.

    Karehill108,

Great question! How do you interpret something you don't understand? You can't. It is impossible to interpret something without first understanding what is being spoken.

Something that might help in understanding 1 Corinthians 14:13 is that the word interpret means explain. It does not mean translate. There are three point-blank facts the bible teaches on speaking in tongues.

Number 1: It is a known language. Not necessarily known to the person speaking, but it is a human language.

Number 2: It is a sign.

Number 3: It is to unbelievers, not believers.

The only example given to us is in Acts 2:1-13. Those who were speaking in tongues were speaking in known languages. There was no need for anyone to interpret or translate the tongues being spoken. In fact, in Acts 2:8, it says "And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?"

You see, they were not looking for someone to interpret or translate what was being said. Those who were speaking in tongues were speaking in known languages and it was understood by those who were hearing them speak. Acts 2:9-11 gives us a list of the languages from which they were speaking. And then Acts 2:12 says that "they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?"

So, they were all amazed, and they were in doubt, saying one to another, what does this mean? Again, they weren't asking for anyone to interpret what they heard. They were needing an explanation. They're not asking what they were saying when they asked, "what does this mean?" They said we can hear them in our own languages, but what does this mean? They admit that it's a miracle, but they really don't know what's going on.

It's sad that what many call "speaking in tongues" today is not the tongues the bible teaches. The tongues in the bible were actual known human languages, not a bunch of babbling gibberish sounds that no one, not even the person speaking can understand.

    Hope this helps!

Sorry I meant Mark 5:40-41, not Matthew.

    Hello Jesse

Let me give you my understanding about that.

Firstly the anc grks had no word for "translate" like in mod. grk, they used the word "interprete" instead, see Matthew 5:40-41.

Secondly, lets see the verse in 1 Cor 14:13, "Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.". I honestly do not think that Paul suggests here to christians in Corinth to learn foreign languages. It seems to me that he suggests that they pray to God to give them the interpretation of what is said.

Lets see another verse, 1 Cor 12:7-11, where Paul speaks about spiritual gifts that God gives to His church. Verses 10-11, "(10) To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues;TO ANOTHER THE INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES: (11) But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."

So interpretation of tongues is a spiritual gift given by the Spirit. Of course one who understands the language that is spoken can also interprete but in such a case it is not the gift that is working but the knowledge of that man.

Whether people in various congregations seem to you that they don't speak in real tongues, that has nothing to do with what is written. And it is written that God gives interpretation of tongues no matter how people use that gift, properly or not.

    Giannis,

    Thanks for sharing your understanding.

Acts 2:1 through verse 11, they all heard their own "language".. it lists the various countries from where many of those people who listened were from. Verse 8 says.. and how hear we every man in our own tongue (language), wherein we were born? Tongues are not applicable in a congregation where everyone speaks the same "language". If there is a "language" difference the interpreter should understand both languages, through the direction of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will provide the "understanding" if it is needed.
