    Hi Richard,

I was thinking of posting about God being invisible. I am glad you did. The Scriptures clearly teach that God in His essence is invisible. At times He appears in theophanies where He is seen in a form, but this is a manifestation of Him (flame and voice in burning bush, materialized angel along with two angels visiting Abraham, pillar of cloud/fire, shekinah glory in the tabernacle), not seeing Him in His true essence. He dwells in unapproachable light ( 1 Ti. 6:16), a God who hides, (Is. 45:15).

John says that God is Spirit ( Jn. 4:24), not 'a' spirit, but pure spirit only, not having a physical form (Dt.4:12) Because of His infinity, He is not bound by a body made of matter taking up a specific amount of space and subject to time. , His Being does not take up portion of space, rather His Being is all encompassing of all that there is, everywhere present, filling heaven, earth and eternity. Before creation there was no space, only God's being. He has no wight, no mass, no form, no taste, no smell, nothing tangible that can be sensed by physical human senses, so He is imperceptible by physical means.

If He did not reveal Himself to humanity leaving evidence of His power and majesty in creation, in His visitations to godly men, and in what He spoke to the patriarchs, prophets, and apostles to record in Scripture, humanity would not know of His existence or know Who He is or What He is like. He is transcendent, completely separate and unlike anything He created. Mankind is made in His image in some ways, but He is so much more, higher, and other than the image of God created in humans. His existence is inferred because of the effects of His actions. Otherwise, He would be completely unknowable to us. He put limits on us as to His visibility. He is real a real Being, with mind, consciousness, will, and all the attributes we speak of here. But He determined that we cannot and will not be able to see Him in His essential nature. We will see Him in Christ.
