The most penetrating and devastating definition of sin that I am aware of in Scripture is the last part of Romans 14:23: "Whatever is not from faith is sin." The reason it is penetrating is that it goes to the root of all sinful actions and attitudes, namely, the failure to trust God.

If we are not perfect in this, we are sinful.

    Hello Spencer

My understanding of that verse may differ from others'.

First lets consider what the specific passage is about. It is about those christians who may consider as a sin something which is not really a sin, like say eating meat, like celebrating a specific day like Sabbath, etc, but to them it is considered as a sin. And Paul ends up saying that everything that does not originate from one's faith is sin, which means that something which in accordance to one's faith is sin then to him (and only to him) it is a sin. That is why Paul says, " And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin." In general that means that if one eats meat which he considers as a sin, then in his conscience he damns himself because he sins according to his faith, so eating meat is not right in his faith, it is not of his faith or from his faith (of right and wrong).

    Blessings Jesse,

I agree 100 % with you and Spencer that what is not of faith is sin. This agreement is made evident by my statement in a previous post stating that it is impossible to have faith in sin, for sin is faithlessness.

Because having faith in sin is synonymous with believing in its existence, i.e it is real, reality, factual, non fiction, true, etc.; shouldn't we remove from our mind the idea of sin, which in essence is proclaiming that sin is actually a fiction, i.e. not real, not reality, is an illusion, is a lie, etc?

The idea of sin is the most holy concept in the ego's thought system; lovely, powerful, and wholly true, and necessarily protected with every defense at its disposal.

So where then, did the idea of sin originate?

We MADE what we would destroy, everything we would hate, and attack, and would kill. We MAKE what we defend against, and by our own defense against it, does it SEEM real and inescapable. We need but lay down our arms, and then will we perceive it as FALSE.

Lies, illusions, fiction --- The Mind of God not being their source; therefore impossible to exist in his awareness. God does not dream; specifically in nightmarish form, which is what this world APPEARS to be. It is evident we are in a sleeping state and need only to awaken to realize we are still as God created us: perfect, holy. We've literally never left Him and in reality are at home in God merely dreaming of exile, but perfectly capable of awakening to reality.

What God did not create does not exist. And everything that does exist exists as He created it.The world we see has nothing to do with reality. It is of our own making, and it does not exist. It can only be in our own mind apart from His.

Opposites, i.e. what is opposing, cannot exist in God's Mind, as it is the cause of confusion. It can only exist in a split mind that believes it possible to maintain two opposing thought systems, and remain sane.

    Peace

    Brother Spencer,

Yes, that is a very powerful statement, "For whatsoever is not of faith is sin." So, anything that is not of faith is sin. Wow! Anything that is not prompted by God's Spirit is sin. That's what it is saying. That's what faith is. The word "faith" in the Greek text is a word that literally means persuasion.

So, faith is the persuasion and leading of God's Spirit. And anything that is not of faith (persuasion of God's Spirit) is sin. That pretty much sums up what sin is. Anything that I do which is not under the persuasion of God's Spirit, for me that is sin. It can even be something that we see as being perfectly okay, such as a hobby, sports, or participating in something we like to do. Anything we do apart from the persuasion (faith) of God's Spirit, that is considered sin.

An example of this would be God's Spirit persuading me to study the bible later on tonight. But later in the day, my wife wants me to take her to a new movie that just came out, and she wants to go tonight. What am I going to do? I mean I love my wife and I want to make her happy. Is it a sin if I choose to go to the movie, and just study longer tomorrow? But you see, we are constantly faced with choices like this each and every day.

Do you think that we sin throughout the day?

    Hi Jesse,

It costs something to be a disciple of Christ. To live for Christ is to let go of all our possessions, pick up our cross, and follow Him. We no longer live for ourselves, we live for the King. If Jesus can die on the cross for our sins, the least we can do if give him our life and proclaim the gospel to the whole world. "If you have not chosen the Kingdom of God first, it will in the end make no difference what you have chosen instead. By: William Law

"If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple." Luke 14:26

Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." Matthew 16:24-25

"We have suffered from the preaching of cheap grace. Grace is free, but it is not cheap. People will take anything that is free, but they are not interested in discipleship. They will take Christ as Savior but not as Lord." By: Vance Havne

Jesse, Jesus tells us that its impossible to live a worldly life, and still follow him!

    Bro dan,

Amen! Jesus, in speaking about our service ( Matthew 6:24) said that we cannot serve two masters. The word "cannot" in the Greek text literally means that we do not have the capacity. We have not been created with the capacity to serve more than one master. It's impossible!

Thank you for sharing these quotes, one from William Law, and I am guessing the other quote is from Vance Havner? What he seems to be describing is a person who calls Jesus their Savior without fully surrendering their life to Him.

Now, William Law makes an interesting statement, "If you have not chosen the Kingdom of God first, it will in the end make no difference what you have chosen instead." Very true. A life without Christ is pointless!

    Blessings to you also!

    Blessings Jesse,

I agree that we cannot serve two masters; the reason being is that there is ONLY ONE Master. No others exist; being false gods, making it impossible to do so. All false idols are the source from a split mind in a state of dissociation. To even believe there is a devil (ego) is indicative of this.

What is the ego? But a dream of what I really am. A thought I am apart from my Creator and a wish to be what He created not. It is a thing of madness, not reality at all. A name for namelessness is all it is. A symbol of IMPOSSIBILITY; a choice for options that do not exist. We name it but to help us understand that it is nothing but an ancient thought that what is MADE (not created) has immortality. But what could come of this except a dream which, like all dreams, can only end in death?

If there are no false masters, then belief in sin, darkness, sick bodies and bodies that die, are simply an illusion.

The ego is the fictional opposite of Perfect Love in EVERY way, and I must remove my faith in its existence: NOW where there was darkness now I see the light. What is the ego? What the darkness was. Where is the ego? Where the darkness was. What is it now and where can it be found? Nothing and nowhere. Now the light has come: Its opposite has gone without a trace. Where evil was there now is holiness. What is the ego? What the evil was. Where is the ego? In an evil dream that but seemed real while we were asleep dreaming it. Where there was crucifixion stands God's Son. What is Satan? Who has need to ask? Where is Satan? Who has need to seek for an illusion now that dreams are gone?

A split mind does not have the CAPACITY to stand on the Solid Rock; its house (mind) will collapse, being built on sinking sand.

Yes, it IS impossible to serve two masters. What God did not create can only be in our OWN mind apart from His.

Wake up oh sleeper, rise from the dead and Christ will shine on you. I'm also speaking to myself.

    In respect, peace

    One eighty,

Blessings to you also. Even though we are to serve Christ alone as our master, there are some (even believers) who make the material things of this world (mammon) their master. But Jesus says we do not have the capacity to serve both.

What you have shared about the ego is quite interesting. If I might ask, did you gather this information from A Course In Miracles International (acimi)?

Much of what you are sharing with me is word for word from one of their courses titled "The Ego - The Miracle."

Are you taking courses from their website?

    Amen and thank Brother Jesse.

I agree 100% and yes I think that we sin throughout the day?

We also dishonor God in our proud haughtiness when we do something right.

Even in ministering and persuaded by God we have to sometimes repent because of the proud emotions come over us.

Our happiness over something we shouldn't be is sinful.

    Our humility is tested everyday.

Thanks for all you do brother.

    God bless

Hey S.. this is another good definition of sin, "whoever commits sin also transgresses the law, for sin is the transgression of the law. 1 John 3:4. Goes along good with that verse you mentioned earlier.

    Thanks Rainwalker.

    I agree!

    God bless you.
