    Ge.4:15 Mark of Cain

"And theLordset a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him./And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden." (vv.15-16)

First we shall take up the significance of the mark that God had set upon him. God is a Spirit whose mark cannot go against his holiness. Of his perfection Jesus had thus to say, "For he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust."(Matt.5:45) Here we are on sure ground to say that we see the Spirit of grace is in operation. Just as He called out Adam and created him in his own image so he is a double for his Son, he set the mark to remind of the Son whom He shall send in fullness of time. As the Word become flesh there could only be one mark that fits here.

As the son of perdition is marked 666 God set 12 as the mark of Cain. By the same rationale we have this verse in connection with Noah again another double for his Son, "And theLordsaid, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years."(Ge.6:3) Life of man is formally established in terms of the Gospel of God so this number appeared frequently. We have 12 tribes of Israel and 12 disciples.(Matt.10:1)

After his Ascension the eleven disciples cast lots for tha apostle to take the place of Judas Iscariot. Here also the Spirit meticulously gives us the number 120 who gathered in the upper room. (Ac.1:15) The Spirit uses the number 12 to signal the rounding off the body of Christ and he employs the Min-Max mode of narrative. Thus the city of New Jerusalem coming down from heaven is in multiples of 12. "Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife./And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending..." (Re.21:9-10)

Does knowledge of the mark add to our spiritual growth? I think not.
