"In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations."
Trees of righteousness produce good fruits. In the abstract we have "and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.". What was agreed between the Father and the Son cannot bring forth fruits of uncertain quality. Their goodness is because the seed in itself is the word of God. Number 12 is affixed by the Spirit to indicate these trees every one of them is a new creation. Old things are passed away. These trees figure in the Psalm 1:3 ""And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."
These are planted by God by the river and as with the vision of Daniel (Dan.12:5) each of us planted by God looks across and see the tree of life and the key text refers to what our vision of Zion ought to be. The tree of life does not change her quality. It is for the healing of the nations. While the ungodly nations resort to wars what they really needs is healing themselves. This is the river of time beginning from the waters above the firmament and it figures in the Psalm 1. We are to bring forth our fruits in season and not espouse the cause of brambles and thistles. How we are nourished so our leaves are evergreen is by the grace of God.
As sojourners and pilgrims we grow from strength to strength. ""They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God."(Ps.84:7)
"Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river." The same river flowing from Eden watering the garden is leading us to the holy city of God.
