God commanded lights in the firmament of the heaven "and let them be for signs," and it is what set the "wise men from the east to Jerusalem." Like the jot and the tittle they are marks set by God so the eternal word forever settled in heaven makes them eternal portent warning people. The Spirit tells from where they set out. What is the significance of the east. Ever since the fall of man all migrations have been set in context of Eden. The Garden was placed in the east and after the great flood the nations are said to gravitate 'as they journeyed from the east' and the outer darkness in spiritual terms where the presence of God is inert. Cain went thither and Jesus was sure where the children of the kingdom for their disbelief would end up. (8:12) The Magi must have been occupied with stargazing, the jot and tittle strewn across the face of heaven. In understanding it in terms of the glory of the knowledge in the face of Jesus Christ they would embark on a journey hard but worth their while. They heard the call in their generation. Starlight of supernova reach us and millions of light years may have elapsed. It was thus with them. They set out in faith and a star led them forth.
