"Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance."
Jesus spoke to the nation of Israel in parables. We are told why. "Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand." Their ears were like highway they heard and the message without hinder went out through the other. Similarly they saw the signs of their times and understood nothing since ther eye of faith was shut. Jesus well knew what was in their minds and dared them to step out the vain traditions of their fathers for which they needed repentance. First they required a heart of flesh in the place of stony heart. "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh." (Ez.36:26) Their fruits of repentance prepared the way of the Spirit. So baptism by water was a sacrament and also an act of faith. We already discussed the manner multiplying loaves in each case was followed by specific number of leftover. "And they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full." The Spirit renders it as a memorial of the Son of man who came as bread from heaven and fed specific number who were his fruits. He gave glory to his father.
Similarly fruits of repentance invited the nation to turn away from their traditions, which they would not. They were offended and many left Jesus. "From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him./ Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?" Who were disciples of Jesus? Peter said it for all,"Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life." Those who stayed on showed promise.
In the case of John his ministry pointed to the prince of life and not to himself.
