Hi brother Spencer, I am still thinking of your comments last night on Adam's thoughts. I think you are right on pointing out that the churches of God should not know contentiousness. I think this theme is what is being taught in this chapter. A man not willing to humble himself in the churches of God is a man that is allowing contentiousness into the church. It is like his head is covered in prayer reducing the effectiveness of the prayer. The glory of a woman is her hair for a covering of pride, like a built in deterrent. So to reach out to God in worship a man must humble himself first, with no outward covering and a woman must also humble herself from her natural outward covering. It is reasonable to cover the covering of such natural glory and benefit in a greater humility. The faithful Angels are the good examples of humility for man and woman. Humility keeps the churches of God in unity.
In my congregation and denomination , women always cover their heads during religious services and always have done so . I know other denominations where this is practiced . I wear a head scarf , some ladies wear hats , only if we are actually baptised into the congregation , if a lady isn't baptized then she's not required to cover her head .
If you take those verses a little further on down verses 15 thru 17 it reads as follows.
11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
11:16 But if any man seem to be contentious, WE HAVE NO SUCH CUSTOM, NEITHER THE CHURCHES OF GOD.
11:17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.
Paul is telling them to remember the ordinances, as he delivered them to them.
He's telling them to remember the structure that is set before them but the outwardly performance of this structure in the way they ware their hair, "WE HAVE NO SUCH CUSTOM, NEITHER THE CHURCHES OF GOD.
He's telling them what is structurally right but they have liberty in Christ.
In other words "Not to be extreme in the outward showing of this.
Based on this verse do you think people who wear ballcaps at church and forget to take them off during a prayer (or prophesy) is condemning himself?
What about when its cold and men wear a beanie, such as for an outdoor Christmas service?
In my years of attending church I don't remember one time ever seeing a woman covering her head.
This verse is very clear what it means, yet I don't see any Christians following it. Are people displeasing God by ignoring this verse?
In meditation with you all.
God bless our faithfulness.
God bless you!
In my last reply and last sentence
I meant to say in verse 16 it's saying "Not to be extremely critical in the "lack of"outward showing of this.
God bless.
