" For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be./And except those days should be shortened,"
Ch.24 is a treatise of human sorrows on account of sin. Given that Jesus gave this discourse after sharing his coming passion and death to his disciples (20:17-20) we are to treat the main elements ,-the elect, the nation of Israel and the Gentile nations owing their origin from the beginning. The events shall be played out from the worlds,- heaven. the earth and below which are held together by Jesus Christ. (Col.1:16-18)
Jesus refers to the great tribulation that shall come upon all by the same rationale that sin entered the world through one man.(Ro.5:12) sorrows consequently shall visit upon all. However "but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened."(24:22). The Vision of the Woman clothed with the Son gives us additional clues as to how. The Man child is caught up to the throne of God. He is collectively called the elect shall be delivered from the great tribulation since he is to rule all nations 'with a rod of iron'.
