    Matt.25:14-30 "Unprofitable servant" (1 of 2)

The Parable is with regards to managing the kingdom of God. "And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability." The Lord entrusted his goods to his servants in a casual haphazard manner but with careful manner. In his estimation he made manifest his grace. "For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith./For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office." (Ro.12:3-4).

The servants who prospered added five talents and two talents respectively tapped on their understanding of the Lord's way of doing business and made use of his contacts and traded on his behalf. So they were concerned with pleasing their Lord acording to the measure of faith. Faith is power and its increase is in applying the skills learned in their association with their master. Whether five or two their industry brought joy unto him. "His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."

The servant who was given one talent was called to account in his turn. He used his reason than faith which made the Lord make available 'as though his hands' were for him the initial capital to the market place. It was as good as gold, his liquid assets ready to work. His rational faculties made him fear. Returning the one talent back he said, "And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine."(v.25)

His wickedness was to think with his reason where faith was required. Injury he did to 'the hand of the lord' by hiding it in the ground. He calls him therefore, "Thou wicked and slothful servant."
