I would like to put an end to the pondering as to how many souls went down to Egypt. In the Hebrew scriptures it clearly states 70 went into Egypt and it is written as follows Reuven sons Chanuch, Paloo, Chatzran and Karmi/ Shimon sons Yamuel, Yamin, Ohad Yachin Tzohr Shaul (son of the Canaanite wife) /Levi sons Gershon, Kahat, M'riri/ Yehudah (Er Onan both killed in Canaan because of their crimes )Sheloh, Peretz ,Zerach … Peretz had 2 sons Chatzron, Chamul/ Yisseschar sons Tolah, Pooah, Yov, Shimron /Zvulon sons Sered, Elon, Yachliel ( the heads of these families being the sons who Leah bore and here they include Dinah) in all 33. Gad sons tzifyon chadi shooni etzbon eri arodi ereli / asher yimna yashvah yishvi briyah (serach their sister) and sons of briyah chever and malchiel these being the offspring of zilpah (leah's maid) in all 16 souls. Rachel gave birth to Joseph and Binyamin and the sons of biyamin belah becher ashbel gerah na'aman echi rosh moopim choopim aard, 14 in all. Gad son Chooshim / Naphtali sons Yachtzel Nuni Yetzer Shilem all the offspring of Bilha, Rachel's maid. Take off Er and Onan who dided in Cannan this leaves you with 68…. Yochevet, Moses future mother is borne between Canaan and Egypt , that is 69. So how come 70…….. Oh!!! How could we forget… G-d promised Jacob that he would go down into Egypt with them……. =70
