I have found it instructive to take the Bible literally - that is at its word. The dreadful sin that caused the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is not named. All we know is "the sin is very grevious" & the people are not "righteous". In classic mythic procedure the text shows immediately the unmentionable sin in the survivors. In so doing it says the temptation to incest is primal - that is forever and constant - in operation always. I think contemporary incest scandals show this. In addition anthropological study has shown the incest prohibition to be the only common feature of all societies - through all space and all time. The Bible supports this notion - that's why the text is in Genesis - the begining, primal. The contemporary efflorescence of incest in the 'West' would then signify a degradation of the very foundations of society. Not so Islam.
