regarding Garylord Newman's comment of 12-17--I believe Cain brought the very best A-1 choice of his produce to sacrifice--not "scrubs" as you put it--because of his pride. The Lord could not accept that as a sacrifice--it needed to be a blood sacrifice. Cain could have gone to his brother Abel, the sheep-keeper, and traded for a quality sacrifice animal; because of his pride, he chose not to do that. He wanted to say to the LORD--"See what I did." To give such as sacrifice was a sacrilege. The LORD gave him a second chance in vv. 6 and 7. Cain decided to take his own way.

Christ died for our sins on Calvary. This ended the need for a blood sacrifice--His blood satisfied that requirement. Some people try to take their own way to get to God, as Cain did. They reject the gift of salvation; try to make their own way. "My way is just as good. If I do X number of good works. If the good outweighs the bad. God wouldn't send me to hell--I am too nice." The Word tells us that our righteousness is as filthy rags in God's sight. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life--no man cometh to the Father except by me."
