This is just one of the many, many verses misunderstood, misused, and misquoted in today 's church culture. There are many places in the Bible where we are told to have a healthy 'fear ' i.e. Luke 1 12, 12 4 5, and 7 16 Acts 5 10 11 and 13 16 Romans 11 20 21 and 13 7 2Corinthians 7 1 Ephesians 5 21 Philippians 2 12 1Peter 1 17 and 2 17 1John 4 18 . And, this makes sense we are to 'respect ' the power and just nature of our God, and our God the Father created us with flesh emotion that fear is one emotion that can keep us alive. In context, this 'fear ' Paul speaks of is timidity or cowardice in proclaiming the Gospel. And, Paul 's comment makes sense since any true follower of our Christ will have the Spirit of God in them. That Spirit, according to Jesus, will provide instruction and boldness In fact, Jesus told His disciples not to worry about what they 'd say before the magistrates because the Spirit would instruct them i.e. Mark 13 11 .
