Even though the Ephesus converts and others in the book of Acts received the Holy Spirit after water baptism, some converts in the book of Acts received the Holy Spirit before water baptism. However, I don 't believe that this was proof that they were saved. Let 's use the apostle Paul 's conversion as an example. Acts 9 17 18 proclaims that Paul received the Holy Spirit, and then was baptized. But notice in Paul 's testimony in Acts 22 that Paul 's sins were NOT remitted until after water baptism in the name of Jesus. Acts 22 16 And now why tarriest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Paul repented, received the Holy Spirit and had his sins remitted when baptized in the name of Jesus, just like Acts 2 38. Some converts in the book of Acts receive the Holy Spirit before water baptism, and some after, as it still is today. This saving gospel of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ that was first delivered to the saints is still the saving gospel today. Whether Jew or Gentile, it is the same gospel for everybody.
