Verse 1, speaks of the end of days war told of in Revelation. Verse 3 is describing modern fighter jets. Their missiles once fired upon the targets cause fires before them and the jets are propelled forward by the fires of their jet engines behind them. Peace, the garden of Eden, is before them, the goal strived for in conflict, yet peace itself is destroyed in the acts of war, the desolate wilderness. Verse 25 explains that the symbolic worms are military actions. The worm that destroys the gourd in the book of Jonah is also a military action. Jonah, a word meaning dove, represents Peace and the gourd may symbolically represent a peace agreement that has flaws. Peace wants to exist under any circumstances yet if the circumstances are unjust or cause people to die that are righteous then war is preferable to end the evil.
