    Maybe God's original design for humans was to be immortal- Adam and Eve were until they disobeyed God by eating of the fruit- and for that they will 'surely die', which they later did, so they at that point of eating the fruit switched from being immortal to mortal (capable of dying). But if they didn't eat of it, they probably would have stayed immortal forever.
