15 Jonah s death foreshadows the Lord Jesus Christ: So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea. And the sea ceased from her ragging Jonah s death, is the only thing which can save the sailors from their death. The sailors tried every device they knew. They cast all their wares overboard in an effort to lighten the ship and in that way save themselves. Then even after Jonah had told them that he must be cast overboard, they still insisted upon rowing hard, in the hope that they might by their own works of labor make the death of the substitute unnecessary. But all of it failed, and they had to come to the place where they were willing to accept the death of another if they were to be saved. There is no salvation apart from the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Yet instead men still seek to save themselves through their own works.
