This is just an opinion that I have on the sixth seal mentioned in verses 12-17. When I read this verse, it sounds to me like the description of a global thermonuclear war. Let me explain. John is seeing a future that is at least 2000 years from his time. He really would have little knowledge as to what he is seeing as far as the technological advances of our time. In verse 12, it mentions an earthquake which I believe is literal, but I believe the sun becoming black and the moon becoming the color of blood would be caused from massive amounts of smoke. A nuclear war would definitely cause a massive pollution of the air with smoke. Verse 13 mentions stars falling to the earth. When nuclear missiles are fired, they leave the earths atmosphere for a short time and then reenter which would cause them to appear as meteors or falling stars. In verse 14, it mentions that the atmosphere was rolled apart like a scroll. When a nuclear bomb explodes, the atmosphere literally rolls apart. Clouds are evaporated. The mountains and islands moving can actually happen from the force of a nuclear explosion. In verse 15, the hiding of individuals in dens and mountains sounds like the population of the earth entering bomb and fallout shelters. Now, as I said, this is just an opinion and a thought. But it did make a lot of sense to me.
